Chemnitz is a city for explorers. It is authentic, sometimes rough, but always warm and full of surprises. If you are looking for a city break that offers more than the usual sights, if you want to feel change and experience history, then this city is the perfect destination.
Sandwiched between the well-known Saxon cities of Dresden and Leipzig, Chemnitz often leads an underrated existence as an insider tip. Chemnitz is the “city of modernity” and European Capital of Culture 2025.
The city was once known as the “Saxon Manchester” and was a smoky, booming center of industrialization. Throughout the city, you can still find factory owners’ villas and repurposed brick buildings that now house lofts and studios. The centerpiece of this heritage is the Chemnitz Industrial Museum.

Chemnitz is a must-see for art lovers. The Chemnitz Art Collections on Theaterplatz delight visitors with an outstanding collection of German paintings, from Romantics such as Caspar David Friedrich to Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. However, the absolute highlight is the Gunzenhauser Museum. Housed in an architecturally impressive former savings bank building, it contains one of the most important private collections of German Expressionism, including a wealth of works by Otto Dix.
The monumental Karl Marx Monument, over seven meters high, is the second-largest portrait bust in the world and an unmissable photo opportunity. Affectionately and irreverently nicknamed “Nischel” (head) by the locals, the monument by Soviet sculptor Lev Kerbel is a relic from the 37 years when the city was called Karl-Marx-Stadt.
The city is an amazingly green city that not only offers numerous inner-city recreational areas, but is also the perfect starting point for excursions into the cultural and natural landscape of the surrounding area.
Sights in Chemnitz
Quite honestly? Chemnitz was hardly on my radar until now."Rußchamtz" (Sooty Chamtz), the Saxon Manchester, and of course Karl-Marx-Stadt – I knew the clichés. But a city that is currently reinventing itself after all these ruptures? That was something I wanted to see for myself. So, off to a day in Chemnitz – a city…
