Holidays in the Kaiserwinkl region
The Kaiserwinkl holiday region is located in the Tyrolean lowlands in Austria, right on the border with Bavaria. Nestled between the Chiemgau Alps in the north and the imposing Kaiser Mountains (Wilder and Zahmer Kaiser) in the south, the region includes the villages of Kössen, Walchsee, Schwendt and Rettenschöss.

Hay-milk cheese is one of the culinary trademarks of Kaiserwinkl. The milk from which this cheese is produced comes from cows that have not been fed any fermenting fodder (silage), but only degrees and hay.

It's pouring rain, but that can't stop us. The people who used to walk the Smuggler's Path in Kaiserwinkl couldn't pay attention to the weather either. We are more or less dressed in waterproofs and start the tour in Kössen.

Arrival
By car
Coming from Germany (Munich) on the A8 to Inntaldreieck, then A 93 Inntalautobahn towards Kufstein, leave the motorway at Oberaudorf and take the B 172 to Kössen, Walchsee, Schwendt and Rettenschöss. This route is toll-free!
Travelling from eastern Austria (Salzburg) take the A8 motorway at the Grabenstätt exit in the direction of Marquartstein/Schleching. Turn off in the direction of Kössen.
By train
Destination station is Kufstein. From Kufstein either take a taxi or the Regio Bus No. 4030 to Kaiserwinkl.
There is also the option of travelling to St. Johann in Tirol.
By plane
Kaiserwinkl can be reached from the airports of Munich, Salzburg and Innsbruck in around one to one and a half hours.
By bike
The Mozart cycle path leads 390 km through the lake district of Tyrol, Salzburger Land and Bavaria.
On the way in...
By public transport
There are two regional bus routes that run through the holiday region. A bus runs approximately every hour from Kössen via Walchsee to Kufstein. The bus can be used free of charge with the Kaiserwinkl Card.
By bike
There are hardly any developed cycle paths along the larger roads. However, smaller paths are ideal for cycling. There are a good 180 km of signposted cycle paths in the region.
On foot
There are well-signposted hiking routes of varying degrees of difficulty throughout the region.
By cable car
The Kössen and Zahmer Kaiser cable cars take you up into the Tyrolean mountains.
By car
The car is the ideal means of transport in Kaiserwinkl, allowing you to get to remote places that are not served by public transport.
Tourist tax
The local or visitor’s tax in the Kaiserwinkl region is 2.60 per person per night. Children up to their 15th birthday are exempt from payment.
