It is not always easy to find accommodation in Quebec’s metropolis that is easy on the budget and yet centrally located. We are not actually typical hostel travelers, but on the search for the coolest hostel in Montreal, the M Montreal immediately appealed to us and did not disappoint.
Anyone who thinks of hostels often still has squeaky bunk beds and sterile communal showers in mind. The M Montreal proves the opposite. When we arrived for check-in, we were warmly greeted and quickly introduced to the special features of the property. The hostel consists of two buildings that are connected to each other via a courtyard. The keycard opens the main and annex buildings, the entrance gate to the courtyard, the room, and the doors to the common areas.

Party & People: The M Bar
In the basement of the main building lies the heart for night owls: the in-house M Bar. Forget sad lounges with vending machines, this here is a fully equipped bar with a stage! Events take place here almost every evening, such as Comedy Nights, karaoke, live music, or Beer Pong tournaments.
Slumbering in Style: How You’ll Sleep
The M Montreal offers a mix of dormitories (dorms) and private rooms.

The Dorms – Privacy in the Dormitory
The dorms are clean, modern, and well thought-out. Each bed has its own privacy curtain, its own lamp, and power outlets. The lockers are large enough for a backpack. Important to know: Towels must be rented here or brought by yourself.
Private Rooms – The Apartment Feeling
Private rooms are also offered. For those who want the hostel vibe or are watching their budget, but need privacy, these rooms are perfect. We stayed in one of the rooms for 3 nights and I was pleasantly surprised. In addition to a large and really comfortable bed, there was a fully equipped kitchenette, a small seating area with a table, an en-suite bathroom, and above all, plenty of space! The furniture already had a bit of a patina, but everything was sparkling clean. Those staying in a private room are provided with towels and bed linen free of charge.

Rooftop Romance: Jacuzzis Above the Roofs
The absolute highlight that makes this place a contender for the title of “coolest hostel in Montreal” for us is the roof terrace. After a long day in the city, there is nothing better than jumping into one of the two huge Jacuzzis.
There is plenty of seating on the rooftop area, only the Wi-Fi was a bit weak. But with the view over the city, you can also just simply enjoy the scenery.

Eat, Work & Wash: The Amenities
A large, fully equipped communal kitchen is available to all guests. In the adjacent dining room, you will find plenty of tables – an ideal place for a small workation session, too. A lifesaver for travelers with little luggage: There is a laundromat (coin laundry) directly in the hostel.

Right in the Heart of It: The Location
The hostel is located on Rue Sainte-Catherine East, right in the famous “Village” (the LGBTQ+ neighborhood). The area is colorful, lively, and in summer a purely pedestrian zone full of art installations.
The Berri-UQAM metro station is just a few minutes’ walk away. This is the most important transport hub in Montreal, where three metro lines intersect. From here, you can get anywhere. The Latin Quarter, with its countless bars and restaurants, is also right around the corner.
Our Verdict
The M Montreal is not the cheapest accommodation in the city, but the value for money is unbeatable. For the price of a bed, you get access to Jacuzzis, events, a clean kitchen, and one of the best locations in the city.
Pro-Tip: Book well in advance! Especially in summer and during festivals (like the Jazz Fest or Osheaga), the M Montreal is often fully booked weeks ahead.
