Montréal restaurant tip: Poutine, bagels & plenty of delicious treats

By Susanne JungbluthUpdated 28 Aug 20260 current news items

Montréal is a true paradise for foodies and gourmets! Anyone traveling to the Canadian metropolis quickly realizes: the culinary scene is diverse, colorful, and above all, incredibly delicious. Whether it’s hearty pub food, traditional pastries, or hip food courts—the city has a lot to offer.

Our Favorite Spots for Breakfast & Snacks in Montréal

A good day starts with a good coffee and fresh pastries. Here are our favorites for the morning:

La Cave à Manger

We were immediately taken with this cafe. You walk down a small flight of stairs into the basement and find yourself directly in a bakery. When we arrived early in the morning, it smelled wonderfully of fresh, still-warm pastries and bread. The space is tight, and next to the sales counter, there is a high table for a quick coffee. However, there is an outdoor terrace where you can sit at small tables under yellow umbrellas.

Two black chalkboard signs with white lettering flank the entrance to La Cave à Manger, a bakery and wine shop in Montreal, featuring yellow patio umbrellas and string lights.

We went there for breakfast twice in total. For us, it was a successful start to the day with very good coffee. We tried croissants with and without filling. The croissant with marzipan filling was extremely delicious. The chocolate croissant was an absolute dream, even if a bit too sweet for the early morning.

Our tip: You definitely have to try the roll with pistachio cream filling! It is the absolute bestseller and sells out very quickly. The cream filling takes up almost the entire roll and tastes insanely good.

Bagel Factory (La Fabrique de Bagel)

La Fabrique de Bagel can be found in multiple locations in Montréal. We visited one of the branches one morning and think you shouldn’t miss out on stopping by. You can eat the bagels right there or take them to go. The selection of pre-made bagels is huge, and it wasn’t easy for us to make a decision.

A woven basket filled with branded tote bags and a bag of fresh bagels sits in the foreground of La Fabrique de Bagel, a Montreal bagel factory and restaurant. The background shows a bakery display case filled with sandwiches and various pastries under glass domes.

We ultimately opted for a bagel with salmon and one with ham, and we were not disappointed. Both were super tasty, fresh, and really beautifully juicy.

Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Parlor (Vieux-Montréal)

Sometimes, during a city stroll, you just need a really good ice cream. Since we both enjoy Ben & Jerry’s, this ice cream parlor drew us in almost magically.

The scoops were quite large. It’s not exactly cheap, but you get that delicious Ben & Jerry’s ice cream in return. We enjoyed it.

Hearty Food & Great Pubs

When in Canada, you naturally have to try the local specialties. Here are our restaurant tips in Montréal for hearty food:

franklin’s (Subs and Suds)

On our second day in Canada, we were looking for a place with “the” Canadian food. We wanted to try poutine. We found a “secret tip,” a small restaurant with its own bar, decorated with Mexican elements. The atmosphere is relaxed and very lively.

A bright yellow menu for Franklin's restaurant in Montreal features a variety of dishes including Montreal smoked meat, burgers, poutines, and chicken wings. The menu is organized into sections with colorful, retro-style headings and includes prices for individual items and combos.

We opted for a classic poutine and chicken wings. The portion was large, and the price-performance ratio was spot on. We enjoyed it.

Pub BreWskey

In Montréal, good beer naturally goes with good food. Besides the Canadian “must-eat,” poutine, you can find dishes here that pair perfectly with craft beer.

We visited the brewery twice and really enjoyed the unique beer. On the second evening, we also ate there and chose two different sandwiches. We weren’t that hungry that evening, but the portion was all the larger! We were completely surprised by this excellently filled, giant sandwich. The price was more than justified.

3 Brasseurs

The brewery is located right in the Quartier Latin. The neighborhood is known for its student energy, street art, and lively nightlife. The brewery building spans three floors and features three terraces, including a fantastic rooftop terrace! It’s always quite busy here, and you should definitely reserve a table, especially on weekends.

A burger from Montreal brewery 3 Brasseurs, featuring bacon and greens on a pretzel bun, is served with a side of French fries and dipping sauce on a metal tray.

This brewery’s food menu is an exciting mix of the brewers’ Alsatian-French roots and the hearty cuisine of Quebec. Besides poutine, they also serve tarte flambée (Flammkuchen), for example. We decided on a burger that evening. The meat was cooked to perfection, the value for money was right, and it tasted really good to us.

Le Saint-Bock

Good beer cries out for good food! The beers at Le Saint-Bock are a bit more unusual. For example, I drank green and blue beer. The menu is designed specifically around these unusual beers: classic, cozy pub food meets hearty, local cuisine here.

A plate of Saint Bock poutine from Montreal, featuring french fries topped with cheese curds, brown gravy, and a generous portion of crispy speck.

An absolute must is the house poutine. The crispy french fries and the fresh, squeaky cheese (cheese curds) are drenched in a homemade, deep brown gravy. In addition to the classic version, there are also crazy poutine creations. We had one with bratwurst and one with bacon. It tasted excellent!

For those who can’t decide, this modern food court is perfect. You can find various high-quality offerings under one roof here.
We had a bowl there. It was wonderfully seasoned, fresh, and really delicious.
