On the way in …
By car
If you would like to discover the Greek island, it is best to hire a car. They are offered in almost every tourist town. You should carry a good road map with you. The road signs are often chaotic. Even the signage to the island’s capital varies, with different spellings used for the same place. For example, Κέρκυρα, Kérkyra, Corfu, or there are no road signs at all. You should only leave the roads marked in red if there is no other way. Driving on smaller roads can be quite adventurous.
The islanders know the roads very well. They often drive fast and take risks. You therefore have to pay close attention on the narrow and winding roads.
By bus
There is a well-developed bus network on the island. This connects the tourist resorts of Roda, Acharavi or Paleokastritsa with the island’s capital.
Near the capital, blue buses travel to nearby villages. The green buses travel all over the island.
Fares are quite reasonable and tickets can be bought directly from the driver. If you want to board an arriving bus, you have to give the driver a hand signal to stop.
Best time to travel
The best time to travel is from May to September.
Corfu gets more rain than the other Greek islands. From September onwards, the probability of rain increases.
From the end of October to March, most hotels are closed. Even in the low season in May, tavernas may still be closed.
Time
Corfu is one hour ahead of Central European time. This also applies to summer time.
