Although we lived in a vacation apartment in Karlovy Vary, we were drawn to the restaurants of the city. Cheap food and drinking beer in Karlovy Vary is quite possible, but you should not look for a restaurant directly in the pedestrian zone at the colonnades.
We introduce restaurants that we have visited.
Staroslovanská kuchyně – Old Slavonic cuisine
Everywhere in the city there are signs pointing to the restaurant “Old Slavonic Cuisine”. Actually, this always makes us quite skeptical, especially when pictures with food are shown. We didn’t go there because of the posters either, but because I googled for “beer Karlsbad” and looked for “local beer”. Later we see a connection to the advertisement.
The restaurant is located close to the center in the basement of two houses. We entered the rooms only briefly for payment. The tables were well filled, the atmosphere pleasant. We liked it very much on the small terrace. Here you have to be lucky to get a seat.
We went to the restaurant “Old Slavonic Cuisine” twice and were more than satisfied both times. During our first visit we talked for quite a long time with the boss, who spoke excellent German and of course advertised his business. Not only the restaurant was in the foreground, but also the wellness offer, which is offered with his brewed beer. Unfortunately I had no chance to try this. But it will not have been our last visit to the region and you can come back again!
Of course we tasted the beer extensively after the conversation. In their own brewery the “Karlsbader beer” is produced. It is not filtered and not pasteurized. The semi-dark beer has 7% alcohol, is not bitter and of all the beers we have drunk in Karlovy Vary, it tasted best. The slightly lighter beer was also good, but it did not convince us as much as the semi-dark beer.
You should not miss the food in this restaurant. For Karlovy Vary prices it is relatively cheap and the portions were very generous. I didn’t actually want to eat on our first visit, but I couldn’t resist the apple strudel with nuts, ice cream and whipped cream. Patrick, he actually didn’t want to eat either, read pork ribs on the menu and forgot his resolution just like me. The portion was huge, the meat very well seasoned and prepared just right. I tasted some of the potatoes – the chef can do fried potatoes – crispy on the outside, not burnt and with lots of garlic. Super good!
On our second visit, I chose the Maultaschen filled with veal and Patrick the venison skewer with potatoes and salad. Again we were not disappointed and went home fed up and happy. One more little tip. You should not miss the homemade barley bread. It is baked according to an old recipe and really good.

Restaurant Karl IV.
At Becherplatz there is another brewery in Karlovy Vary. We stopped here after a walk and took a seat on the outside terrace. It was quite empty and an admittedly somewhat grumpy waiter served us. He did not seem to like the fact that we “only” wanted to drink beer in Karlovy Vary.
We got the here brewed Karl IV Dunkel. A dark beer, brewed from four kinds of malt. The menu said that this beer should be a bit stronger, I found it not very tasteful. I drank the Karl IV Halbdunkel. An amber, unfiltered and non-pasteurized beer, with little bitterness. Taste-wise ok, but even this beer did not convince us completely.
In terms of price, the Karl IV is in the favorable midfield. I looked at the food at the neighboring tables. It looked good and the people seemed to like it. Of course I also took a look at the restaurant. A really nice ambience, very big with lots of tables.

Rubin Supermarket and Fresh Cafe
In search of a piece of cake we found it in Café Rubin. The café is integrated into a small supermarket. The outdoor seats are located directly on the bank of the river Teplá.
The cake was not expensive and the pieces were quite big.

BAGEL Lounge
In the pedestrian zone you will find the Bagel Lounge. Here you can mainly get fast food, which is not as cheap as you are used to from fast food. We had dinner there once. The bagels are good and big. If you want a change from the Czech food you can find it here.
