Casino in Mariánské Lázně: Where culture meets imperial history

During a stay in the spa town of Marienbad, a visit to the famous Casino is an absolute must. However, anyone hoping for a gambling hall will be surprised: the Casino in Marienbad is not a place of gambling, but rather the city’s magnificent cultural and event center.

A World-Class Assembly Room: The History of the Casino

The “Gesellschaftshaus Casino” (Social House Casino) was built at the turn of the 20th century according to the plans of architect Josef Schaffer in the Italian Neo-Renaissance style. From the very beginning, it was designed as a “Kursaal” (assembly room). It was intended to be a place for social gatherings, balls, concerts, and grand receptions, providing an appropriate ambiance for sophisticated international spa guests.

The exterior of the Marienbad Casino, a grand Neo-Renaissance building in Mariánské Lázně, features a pale yellow facade with ornate white columns, arched windows, and a green mansard roof adorned with statues.

Its location is as prominent as it is practical: it is situated directly between the traditional hotels Nové Lázně and Centrální Lázně, to which it is connected by corridors.

A Tour Through the Magnificent Halls

Even the foyer, with its majestic staircases, transports visitors back to the glamorous era of the Belle Époque. Whether you enter through the main entrance or—as we did during our tour—via a side entrance directly into one of the halls, the magnificent atmosphere is immediately palpable.

The Mirror Hall: A Stage for World History

Our first stop, the Mirror Hall, exudes the charm of an aristocratic salon. It was here in 1904 that Emperor Franz Joseph I received the English King Edward VII—a major social event that solidified Marienbad’s reputation as a world-class spa resort. A truly fitting venue for such an occasion.

The walls are lined with large, artistically framed mirrors and appear particularly bright and glamorous due to the golden decorations. The room’s design is inspired by Rococo, featuring playful stucco elements, floral motifs, and rich ornamentation.

The Spiegelsaal (Mirror Hall) at the Marienbad Casino features an ornate coffered ceiling, polished herringbone parquet floors, and grand golden chandeliers. Large arched mirrors with elaborate gold frames line the white walls, reflecting the light and architectural details of the expansive ballroom.

The parquet floor creaks softly as we move to the center of the room. I can almost see it before me: visitors in festive attire standing under the shimmering light of the chandeliers. The mirrors make the room appear much larger, and to this day, it remains ideal for festive receptions, chamber music concerts, or as a wonderful small ballroom.

The Heart: The Impressive Marble Hall

Through a large double door, we enter the adjacent hall, which impresses me even more. The Marble Hall is the largest and most prestigious hall in the building and serves as the radiant centerpiece of the Casino in Marienbad. The hall is designed in the Neo-Renaissance style. Its walls are decorated with elaborate scagliola (stucco marble), and the color scheme is kept in light, elegant tones.

My gaze is drawn to the high ceiling. From it hang several massive crystal chandeliers that bathe the hall in a sparkling sea of light in the evening, creating a festive atmosphere. Numerous chairs are lined up in the hall, waiting for guests to enter and listen to one of the many concerts performed here. The excellent acoustics are appreciated by musicians and audiences alike, which is why the West Bohemian Symphony Orchestra, for example, loves to perform here. The hall is also used for the annual Chopin Festival in Marienbad.

The Marmorsaal (Marble Hall) of the Marienbad Casino features rows of red chairs arranged across a parquet floor beneath ornate chandeliers and a vaulted, frescoed ceiling. The grand room is defined by yellow marble walls, towering white columns, and arched doorways draped with dark curtains.

A Window into Film History

An inconspicuous detail holds a special story: a small window in the Marble Hall. Behind this window, in 1946, stood the film projector for the first edition of the now world-famous International Film Festival, before it was permanently moved to Karlovy Vary.

Intimate Elegance: The Red and Pink Halls

The Red Hall radiates a warm, dignified, yet cozy elegance. The walls are designed with fine, deep-red fabric wallpaper or matching colors, which gives the room its name. This bold color is combined with dark, polished wood for the paneling and doors. Golden applications and stucco elements add glamorous accents and underscore the luxurious character. The Red Hall is reminiscent of the elegant salons or libraries of great noble houses and is perfect for conversations in smaller groups. Today, it is used for smaller receptions, lectures, or as a VIP lounge during larger events.

The Pink Hall has the character of an elegant salon. The room is decorated in delicate shades of pink and rose, combined with white and subtle gold applications. The design is more playful and lighter than that of the more formal Red Hall. The room feels bright, friendly, and romantic.

The Casino in Marienbad is more than just a magnificent building. Whether you are listening to a concert by the West Bohemian Symphony Orchestra or simply letting the timeless elegance of the halls wash over you: a visit here is an unforgettable journey into the Belle Époque. Be sure to check the current event calendar. Crown your stay in Marienbad with an evening full of culture and historical splendor. You can find a comprehensive overview of concerts and events in Marienbad, including those at the Casino, on the city’s official tourism website.
