Restaurants of all price categories populate the streets of Prague. But with some research, you can eat well at reasonable prices.
We have compiled our discoveries:
- Kantýna
- Lokál Dlouhááá
- Restaurace U Glaubiců
- Švejk Restaurant U Karla
Kantýna
During our stroll through the town we ended up at the Kantýna restaurant. Here, in a former bank building, a self-service restaurant has been created. Only at second glance do you realise that it is a restaurant. If you step through the door, you are first in a butcher’s shop.

If you walk through the shop, you will pass a cash desk. There you will get a kind of “routing slip” on which you can see what you have ordered at the stations. Later, you pay at the cash desk what is noted there. This system is self-service, as you can see!

At the bar we first ordered something to drink. Our choice was the Royal Crown Cola, which I had never heard of before. This drink was made in 1905 in Columbus, Georgia, by the pharmacist Claude A. Hatcher. Even the bottles are really stylish. But it tasted good too!
Patrick then brought something to eat from the “food counter”. Here the meal is sold by weight and placed on a wooden board. You can take bread with it. The system is tempting, because you can put your food together “wildly” and try a little something from everyone.

Patrick initially limited himself to a small selection, it was only meant to satisfy a small hunger in between. The vegetables were very good, still slightly crisp and not overcooked. The meat was also very tender and had a great taste of its own.
One more word about the restaurant. The ambience is really unusual. Tables and chairs really have more of a canteen character. But if you look into the room and up at the ceiling, the restaurant looks rather noble and you can see the old building.

In terms of price, the food is higher than canteen prices. However, the quality justifies the price, which is still reasonable compared to other restaurants in Prague.

Lokál Dlouhááá
Already during our last visit to Prague we were drawn to the Lokál Dlouhááá. It was simply great and reason enough to have dinner there again.
If you want to be sure to get a table here, you should either eat here at completely untypical times or reserve a table. We were lucky and were able to get hold of one of the few unreserved tables.

The Lokál has a long, tube-shaped guest room. If you only want to drink a beer, you can do it in front of the restaurant, this is where people meet and especially in the evening hours small groups always get together and talk.
Our beer selection is very simple in Lokál. Here you can get the unfiltered Kozel black on tap. A wonderful tasting dark beer.

The food here is hearty. Patrick has ordered a knuckle – luckily without side dishes, because the quantity was not manageable even so. The meat fell off the bone almost by itself and was tender and juicy. I enjoyed meat (unfortunately I don’t remember what it was exactly) with bread dumplings and lots of sauce. Even if the meat was really great, I think I would have been satisfied with the dumplings with the sauce. I am a fan of dumplings with sauce!

We can recommend a visit to Lokál. We like the food, we love the ambience and we have always been served very nicely.

Tip: There are several restaurants in Prague called Lokál. It is a small groupe, which are identically positioned from the drinks point of view. There are also many similarities in the area of food, but each Lokál has 1-2 things on the menu that are not found in others.
Restaurace U Glaubiců – touristy but ok prices
The Restaurace U Glaubiců is situated below the Prague Castle, right in the middle of the tourist area. That fit very well into our sightseeing program of the day, so I booked a table in advance via email. Unfortunately, it is not a non-smoking restaurant, but when we passed it a few hours before our booking, I briefly asked in the restaurant to be seated in a non-smoking area. That actually worked quite well; we were brought down to a vault where smoking was not allowed. Unfortunately, we shared the room with other groups, who, of course, wanted to chat just as much as we did and so it became quite noisy.

The service was friendly and really fast. It became clear that many guests come and go throughout a day, and so service needs to be quick.
The food selection covered savoury and vegetarian but was rather heavy on the meats. Various beers were offered.

Our food was served quickly, but vast differences in quality occurred within the group. For example, out of three ordered portions of Spaetzle, only 2 were warm and the meat in some dishes was somewhat chewy. On the whole, however, the taste was good and so was the beer.

The restaurant is big, food is served in large quantities. This is certainly not in favour of consistent quality. Considering the location of the restaurant, the prices for the dishes were quite okay. I enjoyed my food anyway.

Švejk Restaurant U Karla – cheap food in Prague
Booking a table in advance by email was no problem for the restaurant U Karla. It is a non-smoking restaurant!

As we were looking for the restaurant, we walked past it first. The windows were relatively dark and only at a second glance did we realize that this was the restaurant. We were greeted very warmly and guided to our table, a little away from other guests. The waiter spoke German and also the menu was in German, which pleased some participants of our group. The food selection was very good. From the typical Czech meat dish to the vegetarian dish, everyone from our group found something they fancied. Then came the food and I do not exaggerate when I say the table was almost too small. From burger to 1/4 of a duck, dumplings, baked broccoli and cauldron goulash – we had really ordered everything

With it, we ordered delicious dark and light beer. And then it got very quiet at the table. All 11 travellers were enthused, we enjoyed it very much.

The meat was very tender and fried to the point, the side dishes brought it home. The evening was a success, also in terms of prices. Dishes ranged from 7 € to 13 €, the beer cost under 2 €. For my light lager and steak burger with chips, I paid a little over 11 €.

The restaurant and the food they offered was a great find and I would certainly go again, even without a larger group.
