Föhr Island: A paradise in the Wadden Sea

Föhr is the second largest North Frisian island. It belongs to the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein and is nestled in the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island is an ideal destination for anyone who wants to get away from it all and enjoy the tranquillity of the North German coastal landscape.

The island of Föhr impresses with its diverse landscape. With over 15 km of sandy beaches, Föhr invites you to sunbathe, walk and swim at any time of year. The extensive marshlands and green meadows offer ideal conditions for long bike tours and hikes. A mudflat hike is particularly attractive, where you can experience the Wadden Sea up close and discover the unique flora and fauna.

The island’s capital Wyk attracts countless holidaymakers every year with its charming alleyways, the Frisian Museum and the many stores and cafés. In the idyllic island villages, you can admire thatched-roof houses and experience Frisian culture up close. The medieval churches with their ornate carvings and frescoes are also well worth a visit.

How to get here

By car
There are two main routes from Hamburg to the ferry port in Dagebüll:

A7 towards Flensburg
A23 and the B5 via Husum

When you arrive in Dagebüll, you can either park your car in the island parking lot, from where a free shuttle bus runs to the ferry port, or you can take your car onto the ferry.

By train
Deutsche Bahn trains run to Niebüll, from where a private train runs directly to the Dagebüll-Mole ferry port. The train and ferry timetables are coordinated to ensure a smooth transition. Once you arrive in Dagebüll, you can change directly to the ferry.

By ferry
The crossing with the Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei (W.D.R.) ferry from Dagebüll to Föhr takes around 40 to 45 minutes. The ferries depart as early as 05:00 in the morning and also offer late return trips at weekends.

By plane
The airfield in Wyk on Föhr can be approached by small private planes all year round.

There are various bus routes that run across the island.

By bike
There are bike rental stations in almost all towns. Bikes should be reserved in advance during the high season. Some of the cycle paths are quite well developed.

Best time to visit

Spring (March to May)
Spring on Föhr is characterized by mild temperatures and blossoming nature. In March, temperatures are around 6 °C, rising to 14 °C in May. In May there is an average of 9 days of rain and the sun shines for an average of 8 hours a day.

Summer (June to August)
Summer is the most popular time to visit Föhr as the weather is warm and sunny. It can get very crowded during the school vacations. Temperatures range between 16 °C and 21 °C, with August being the warmest month. Water temperatures reach between 17 °C and 20 °C in July and August. There are around 6 days of rain in June and 7 to 11 days of rain in July and August.

Autumn (September to November)
In September, temperatures are around 17 °C, dropping to around 6 °C in November. The sun shines an average of 4 to 5 hours a day in the fall and there is an average of 10 to 13 days of rain per month.

Winter (December to February)
Winter on Föhr is cool and windy, but rarely extremely cold. Temperatures range from 1.8 °C in January to 6.8 °C in February. In winter, there is an average of 12 to 18 days of rain per month.
