The Augustiner Bräustuben in Munich are a real highlight for lovers of Bavarian tradition, hearty cuisine, and above all, first-class beer. For us, it was an evening restaurant visit that fulfilled all our expectations of Bavarian coziness and hospitality.
The Guest Area
We arrived at the Augustiner Bräustuben when it was already dark, so unfortunately, we couldn’t see much of the adjoining brewery building. I had reserved a table in the beer hall in advance, which was a good decision as it quickly became quite full during our stay.

The Bräustuben offers various areas that are opened depending on capacity. The rustically furnished “Stüberl” offers space for about 120 guests. The “Alte Schmiede” (Old Smithy), which housed the brewery’s smithy until 2008, is equipped with rustic wooden tables and offers about 140 people the opportunity to enjoy a beer. I also took a look at the roof terrace, which was very well attended despite the cooler evening temperatures.

We had opted for the beer hall, which for me is the heart of the establishment. Where horses once stood, there are now large wooden tables with benches. A visual highlight is certainly the large, sectioned copper kettle where the pub’s bar is located. Something very special: here, the beer is tapped from wooden barrels, which gives it a special taste. The beer hall is quite large and, when all 300 seats are occupied, not the quietest place.
Dinner at the Augustiner Bräustuben
Dinner at the Augustiner Bräustuben begins with a warm welcome from the staff. The open kitchen allows you to catch a glimpse of the food preparation, while the aroma of freshly roasted meat and Bavarian specialties wafts through the room.

The menu offers a wide selection: from Munich sausage specialties and hearty snacks to vegetarian dishes. We opted for a Munich Schnitzel with potato salad and half a crispy pork knuckle in a dark beer sauce with potato dumplings. Those who prefer something less hearty should order the snack platters with Obazda, Radi (radish), and pretzels. They looked really good on the neighboring tables.

We didn’t have to wait long before the generous portions, as befits a traditional inn, were on our table. We were very surprised by the prices, which were quite reasonable for Munich, especially given the large portion size. The schnitzel meat was quite firm and unfortunately a bit dry. It had probably been sitting out for a while. The potato salad was excellent. The meat of the pork knuckle, which had a wonderfully crispy skin, was juicy and tender.
The Beer – A Masterpiece of Brewing
For a beer lover, a visit to the Augustiner Bräustuben is an absolute must. The Augustiner brewery, which has been in existence since 1328, is Munich’s oldest brewery and is known for its quality and traditional brewing art. It is particularly noteworthy that the beer at the Augustiner Bräustuben is tapped directly from wooden barrels. This method gives the beer a special freshness and an incomparable aroma that is rarely found in industrially bottled beers.
We opted for the Augustiner Helles and Augustiner Hefeweißbier.

The Augustiner Helles, served directly from the wooden barrel, is an experience that is hard to find elsewhere. It is a prime example of a Bavarian lager and is characterized by its golden-yellow color, a fine-pored head, and a balanced taste. The first sip reveals a pleasant malt sweetness accompanied by a subtle hop bitterness. The carbonation is perfectly balanced, making the beer particularly easy to drink.
The Augustiner Hefeweißbier is a very typical Bavarian beer. The banana-like fruit note is not particularly pronounced, and the taste is quite smooth. For me, it’s a perfect beer for the summer.
A Successful Evening
A dinner at the Augustiner Bräustuben offers an interplay of traditional cuisine, a rustic ambiance, and the incomparable taste of Augustiner beer. Whether you are a tourist wanting to experience Bavarian culture or a local looking for a cozy evening – the Augustiner Bräustuben is always worth a visit. We will definitely be back!
