Munich beer garden culture – What non-Bavarians should know

Munich is the epitome of a centuries-old beer garden culture. A visit to one of the city’s traditional beer gardens, such as the famous Augustiner-Keller, is a must—not just for tourists, but for anyone wanting to experience a piece of the Bavarian way of life. However, before you sit down under the shady chestnut trees to enjoy a freshly tapped beer, there are a few things non-Bavarians should know about this unique culture.

Bavarian beer garden culture dates back to the early 19th century. At that time, breweries dug storage cellars into the ground to keep their beer cool. These cellars were shaded with chestnut trees to ward off the heat—and thus, the idea of the beer garden was born.

Today, beer gardens are an integral part of Munich’s culture. They stand for Gemütlichkeit (coosiness/comfort), tradition, and conviviality, serving as a meeting point for young and old, tourists and locals alike.

Crowds of people gather at long green picnic tables under the shade of lush trees at a biergarten in Munich's Englischer Garten.

Beer gardens are outdoor locations. This means they are only open during good weather. As soon as the sun shines, Munich residents flock to the beer gardens in droves to enjoy their evening after work. Summer evenings are particularly lively and atmospheric—a perfect opportunity to experience the special flair.

Self-service or service area?

A typical feature of many Munich beer gardens is the separation between the self-service and the service area. In the service area, you are served classically at the table, similar to a restaurant.

In the self-service area, you can get food and drinks at the counter and sit at one of the long, rustic wooden tables. The beer is often cheaper than in the service area and you have the opportunity to share the table with other guest

A special feature of Bavarian beer garden culture is the permission to bring your own food. Important to know: drinks, especially beer, must always be purchased on-site.

A green sign at the Augustiner-Keller in Munich explains in German and English that, by Bavarian tradition, guests in the self-service area may bring their own food but must purchase all drinks from the establishment.

The Munich beer garden culture has unwritten rules that every visitor should know to fully enjoy the experience:

  • In a beer garden, relaxation counts. Hectic or stress have no place here.
  • Tables in the self-service area are not reserved. It is common to sit down with other guests.
  • Beer gardens are places of community – a smile and a casual tone are part of it.

The beer: Heart of the beer garden

In Munich beer gardens, the beer usually comes fresh from the tap – and is mostly sold in the traditional Maßkrug (1 liter). For many, drinking from the heavy Maßkrug is a highlight of the beer garden visit. Particularly popular is the “Helle,” a mild, pale lager beer. Some beer gardens, like the Augustiner-Keller, even offer beer from traditional wooden barrels, which is known for its particularly fresh taste.

The beer garden culture also has a lot to offer culinarily. In addition to the brought-along “Brotzeit,” you can enjoy Bavarian specialties on-site. The classics include:

  • Brezn (giant pretzels)
  • Obatzda (cheese spread)
  • Schweinshaxe and Hendl (grilled chicken) for the big hunger
  • Potato salad and sauerkraut as side dishes. Vegetarians also get their money’s worth with Brezn, Obatzda, or dumplings.
