In the Berlin district of Spandau, not far from the Citadel, you’ll find Brauhaus Spandau. Initially a meeting point for Spandau locals, beer lovers from all over Berlin now come to enjoy a Havelbräu.
Brauhaus Spandau opened its doors in 1994. It is located at Neuendorfer Straße 1 in a historic building with direct access to Spandau’s Old Town. This building offers the charm of a traditional brewery while providing enough space for the brewing equipment and the restaurant.

From the very beginning, the concept was clear: guests should not only be able to enjoy freshly brewed, naturally cloudy beer but also experience the brewing process live. Parts of the brewing equipment are visibly integrated into the dining area. The concept also includes a rustic food menu that pairs perfectly with the beer.
From the start, Brauhaus Spandau focused on producing natural, unfiltered, and unpasteurized beer according to the German Purity Law. This was a conscious effort to stand out from industrially produced beers. To this day, the emphasis is on quality, freshness, and full flavour. The Havelbräu, the house beer, quickly became a staple and remains the brewery’s flagship today.

Brauhaus Spandau is an established name in Berlin’s brewery scene. This popular destination attracts visitors in the summer with its large beer garden, and during unpleasant weather, there are rustic and cosy spots in the dining room.
Off to Spandau for a Beer!
For us, Brauhaus Spandau is one of the breweries we love to visit again and again. The U-Bahn (subway) takes you almost to the front door, and it’s only about a 15-minute walk from Spandau station (U-Bahn, S-Bahn, regional, and long-distance trains).

In the summer, we enjoy sitting in the beer garden, having a beer, and eating something. I find the dining room very cosy. The copper brewing kettles are visibly integrated into the room, and if you’re lucky, you can watch the yeast at work in the open fermentation tank. For me, a special plus is the team that works there. The regular staff, who have been serving many guests for years with friendly “Berliner Schnauze” (Berlin lip/blunt charm), contribute just as much as the seasonal workers. We have always been served quickly and friendly with liquid and solid nourishment.

What I haven’t done yet is a tour of the brewery or a brewing course. These are offered regularly and surely reveal some insider information.
German Cuisine
The menu is intentionally focused on traditional German cuisine and offers hearty, home-style dishes that pair excellently with the house-brewed beers.
Patrick is a fan of the crispy roasted pork knuckle, while I love the giant Currywurst with fries. Both dishes are so large that we have never left the table hungry.

Beer, Beer, Beer
Of course, beer is also brewed on-site. The naturally cloudy beer “Spandauer Havelbräu” is the house beer. This is complemented by changing seasonal beer specialities.
Spandauer Havelbräu (The House Beer)
My favourite beer! I simply like this dark yellow beer with its small head of foam the best. The top-fermented beer is pleasantly malty-caramelly and has a slightly sour-malty taste. I find the beer very quaffable and not too bitter.

Spandauer Maibock
The Maibock is a pale, bottom-fermented strong beer. The alcohol content is slightly higher, and it has a wonderfully full-bodied taste. I like the malty flavour, which is not too dominant.
Other Seasonal Specialities
Brauhaus Spandau is known for regularly offering new beer specialities. These can include:
- Spandauer Potz-Blitz-Bier (saisonal)
- Spandauer Rotbier
- Spandauer Landbier
- Spandauer Weihnachtsbier
- Spandauer Märzen
- Spandauer Mondschein-Bier

These beers vary in appearance, taste, and type depending on the season and brewing method. They offer a wide range of aromas, from spicy to fruity, from light to strong, and reflect the brewery’s joy in experimenting.
