For true beer lovers, the Straßenbräu Berlin brewery is a must: here, the art of craft brewing meets creative variety that will delight every palate. Whether hop-accented IPAs, traditional stouts or experimental creations – this brewery offers an incomparable selection that will make every beer fan’s heart beat faster.
From dream to reality
The story of Berliner Brauerei Straßenbräu begins in 2015, when founder Timo Thoennißen opened his own neighborhood brewery. In the middle of the lively Friedrichshain district, a brewery was created that specialized in handmade craft beer. The vision was clear: to offer beer lovers a platform where they can enjoy exceptional and individual beers that are created away from industrial mass production.

The main location of Straßenbräu is at Neue Bahnhofstraße 30 in Berlin-Friedrichshain. This is where the taproom, the heart of the brewery, is located, with a total of 14 taps where guests can enjoy a changing selection of freshly tapped beers. Straßenbräu also opened a new brewing facility in Berlin-Marzahn. This modern production facility makes it possible to expand capacity and develop new beer creations. A 10hl and a 3hl brewing plant are used for experimentation and brewing.
If you would like to find out more about the brewery, you can take part in a brewery tour or beer tasting.
For a beer …
The Taproom is in a really ideal location. You can easily reach it by public transport. This is of course ideal if you want to have a beer.
There are tables and chairs on the street in front of the taproom, which is great if the weather cooperates, but we were drawn indoors as it was quite chilly. We chose a seat with a view of the street and sat on high stools. There are also tables at the back of the taproom.

With a selection of up to 12 different varieties, which are available freshly tapped or in bottles in the taproom, the brewery always offers many different flavors. Everyone should find something to suit their taste. When we were at Straßenbräu, there were Pils, Helles, Hefeweizen, Pale Ale, IPA, Berliner Braunbier and Amber Lager. It was difficult to choose.
The beers are served in 0.3l, 0.4l and 0.5l glasses, which start at around €3 and can cost almost €10 per glass, depending on the type of beer. If you can’t decide at all, I recommend the “Pro-Bier Set” where you get 4 glasses (0.1l) and can choose 4 different beers from the current range.
Brewery Straßenbräu – the beers
The beers from Straßenbräu are the result of experimentation and craftsmanship. Each beer is brewed with the utmost care and high-quality ingredients, using both traditional and modern brewing methods.

Sonnenallee IPA
India Pale Ale (IPA) has its origins in the 18th century, when British brewers developed a beer that could survive the long sea voyage to India. The generous addition of hops – a natural preservative – and a higher alcohol content made the beer more durable. The Sonnenallee IPA from Straßenbräu picks up on this tradition, but uses only ingredients from German cultivation.
It is characterized by an intense hop aroma dominated by citrus fruits such as grapefruit and orange. The bitterness is pronounced but balanced. With an alcohol content of around 6.5%, it is a strong yet refreshing beer.
A great beer with a well-balanced taste. Full-bodied, fruity, drinkable – I love it!
Hommel Sap
The name of this beer comes from Old Flemish and means “hop juice”. Hops were first documented in a beer recipe by Benedictine monks in 822 AD. Before this time, beers were flavored with herbal mixtures such as gale or juniper. The Hommel Sap from Straßenbräu pays homage to the Flemish beer tradition.
Hommel Sap is a tropical, fruity beer that impresses with the use of aromatic hop varieties such as Mosaic and Citra. It offers an intense bouquet of mango, pineapple and passion fruit, accompanied by a gentle malty sweetness.

Planhof Bahnlos – a Stout
Stout has its roots in 18th century England. Originally, it was a stronger version of porter, a dark beer that was popular with the workers on London’s docks. The name “stout” means ‘strong’ or “powerful” and refers to the higher alcohol content and more intense aromas.
Straßenbräu’s stout is a dark, full-bodied beer that gets its characteristic aromas of coffee, dark chocolate and caramel from the use of roasted malt. With an alcohol content of 6.0% and a creamy texture, it is a beer that is particularly appreciated in the colder months.
Heimway Helles – Lager
Helle Lager is a classic beer style that was developed in Bavaria in the 19th century. With the invention of the refrigeration machine by Carl von Linde in 1873, it became possible to brew bottom-fermented beers like Helle all year round.
Straßenbräu’s Helles Lager is characterized by its clear, golden color and a good balance between malt sweetness and hop bitterness. The taste is rather mild and with an alcohol content of 4.8% it is a rather light and refreshing beer.
Gutmensch – Hefeweizen
The Gutmensch beer from the Straßenbräu brewery is a modern Hefeweizen that picks up on the traditional characteristics of this beer style and interprets them harmoniously. The beer offers a balanced interplay of fruit and yeast aromas that are typical of a Hefeweizen. It has a mild, slightly malty note that makes the beer particularly harmonious and pleasant.
If you compare Gutmensch with other Hefeweizens, the intense banana flavor is striking. We like it, but other beer lovers might find it a little too much. Unfortunately, the foam was not particularly stable and disappeared after a short time. The beer tasted wonderfully smooth, I like it and for me it’s ideal for summer and the beer garden.

Braunbär – Historical beer
The Braunbär beer from the Straßenbräu brewery is a Berlin brown beer, a historical beer style that has a long tradition in Berlin and the surrounding area.
Historically, brown beer was a dark barley beer characterized by a certain acidity. It was often fermented with lactic acid bacteria, similar to Berliner Weisse, and thus had a refreshing, sour note. It was less sweet and malty than other dark beers and had a moderate acidity. The name “brown beer” was used to distinguish it from wheat beers brewed from wheat and barley, while brown beer was made exclusively from barley.
Braunbär interprets this historical beer style in a modern way. It is a dark, sour beer that takes up the tradition of Berlin brown beer. Despite the tartness, the beer also brings a certain malty depth that could be reminiscent of dark chocolate or caramel.
I had this beer in my Pro-Bier set (number 8). I was not convinced by the taste. Ee was slightly sweet, I found it lacking in fullness, it was rather flat in taste.

Ziegel – Amber Lager
The Ziegel beer from the Straßenbräu brewery is an amber lager, also known as an amber or red style lager. This beer style is characterized by a balanced combination of malty and hoppy notes, with the focus on a pleasant, caramel malt base.
Visually a great beer (with the number 11 in the Pro-Bier set) that shimmered in the glass with its great color. In terms of taste, I had expected something stronger.
Feierabend IPA
I also tried Feierabend, a fruity IPA with an alcohol content of 6.2% (glass number 5 in the Pro-Bier set). I think the beer stands out with its golden yellow color. The beer is rightly named. It’s perfect for after work!
Marzahner Pils
The Mahrzahner was number 1 in my Pro-Bier set. The pilsner has an alcohol content of 5% and has all the characteristics of a good pilsner: a strong, slightly tart and bitter taste, full body and drinkable. I liked it!
