Berlin is known for its lively and varied beer scene. Among the city’s many breweries, beer lovers will also find the Brewery Südstern.
A brewery in the neighborhood
Brewery Südstern is located in the Kreuzberg district, right next to Volkspark Hasenheide. It is a meeting place for anyone who appreciates craft beer and longs for an authentic Berlin brewery experience.
Brewery Südstern was founded in 2005 by Thomas Mammitzsch. He had the vision of creating a modern brewery in Berlin that combines craft beer and convivial hospitality. With the Südstern, he has created a brewery that not only delights beer lovers, but also introduces curious guests to the art of brewing beer.
Since opening in 2005, Südstern has made a name for itself in the Berlin craft beer scene and we also like to stop by to enjoy a beer. When the weather is good, we are drawn to the beer garden. Here you can sit comfortably and enjoy your beer. If the weather is not quite so pleasant, we are drawn to the guest room. The gleaming steel kettles in the guest room are not only an eye-catcher, but also the heart of the brewery. This is where the beer is brewed on site and where, of course, it is also freshly tapped.
The beers of the Südstern
One of the highlights at Brewery Südstern is the beer selection. Regulars particularly appreciate the classics such as the Helle Stern, a mild and drinkable lager, or the Dunkle Stern, which impresses with its malty character. But that’s not all – the brewery also ventures into creative interpretations of international beer styles. Südstern’s Pale Ale delights with fruity hop notes, while the wheat beer pays homage to Bavarian brewing traditions.
In summer, I was able to drink the wonderful Aurora Ale. The top-fermented beer has a very dark color that is very reminiscent of amber. I particularly liked the fruity notes of passion fruit and citrus in summer. With an alcohol content of 5.2%, it is a lively, refreshing summer beer.
The wheat beer called Stern Weisse is a typical Bavarian wheat beer. I find it very fruity and drinkable.
Heller STERN
Helle STERN is a classic pale ale that is characterized by its southern German brewing tradition. It is an unfiltered beer, which means that the yeast remains in the beer, giving it a natural cloudiness and a particularly fresh taste.
This beer presents itself with a delicately tart and fresh character, created by the balanced combination of the Hallertauer Herkules and Hallertauer Perle hop varieties. The taste is slightly sparkling, which makes the beer particularly refreshing. The proportion of original wort gives the beer a subtle malty sweetness that harmonizes perfectly with the hops. I think the beer tastes extremely smooth and round.
Visually, the Helle STERN has a golden hue, which is given a natural, lively appearance by the yeast turbidity.
With an alcohol content of approx. 5.0%, the beer is pleasantly light and is ideal for social gatherings or as a refreshing drink on warm days.
Dunkler STERN
Dunkle STERN is a classic dark beer that impresses with its strong malt aromas and unfiltered brewing method.
This beer is characterized by its malty aroma and strong character. The use of Pilsner malt and colored malt creates a complex malt base that brings out notes of caramel, chocolate and toasted bread.
The beer has a dark, deep brown color, which is given a special vibrancy by the yeast turbidity.
With an alcohol content of around 5.4%, the Dunkle STERN is somewhat stronger than the Helle, but still remains pleasantly drinkable. The beer doesn’t quite suit my taste. I find it too sweet and for me it has too strong a malty aftertaste. Patrick really likes the beer.
Food to go with the beer
Culinary delights are on offer at Brewery Südstern. The menu includes hearty brewery classics such as roast pork with dumplings or tarte flambée, as well as modern dishes that harmonize perfectly with the various beers. If you fancy a beer with a schnitzel on a Monday, you should visit the “Schnitzel Day” at Brewery Südstern. There are also delicious options for vegetarians and vegans, making the Südstern a popular destination for a wide variety of guests.
We haven’t tried the menu yet. But we’ve always enjoyed what we’ve eaten so far!
