Hausbrauerei Eschenbräu is one of the best-known microbreweries in Berlin and is located in the Wedding district, not far from Leopoldplatz. It is somewhat hidden between tall houses in an inner courtyard.
The brewery was founded by Martin Eschenbrenner, a passionate brewer who studied brewing at the Technical University of Berlin. After graduating, he decided to set up his own brewery to establish craft beer in Berlin. The location in Berlin’s Wedding district was deliberately chosen to create a link between the traditional art of brewing and the urban environment.
The brewery started small and still stands for traditional brewing today. The beer garden, surrounded by the prefabricated buildings of Wedding, is a popular meeting place that attracts many visitors with its relaxed atmosphere and the opportunity to bring their own food. The Eschenbräu is an integral part of Berlin’s beer culture. There is now even a distillery and a juicer.
The unfiltered beers are served exclusively on site – either directly from the barrel or from the tank. The brewery deliberately avoids modern, forced fermentation and maturation processes and remains true to the traditional brewing method, which gives the beers their special character.
Beer from Eschenbräu
In addition to the classic varieties, Eschenbräu also offers seasonal beers that are freshly tapped every 14 days.
Pilsner
Pilsner is one of the absolute classics in the Eschenbräu range. This tart, hoppy beer impresses with its rich yellow color and unmistakable aroma. With an alcohol content of 5.0 % and an original gravity of 11.9 %, it combines the best characteristics of a traditional pilsner, but stands out with a special note.
The aroma is hoppy and floral, accompanied by refreshing citrus notes. On the palate, the pilsner has a full-bodied, malty body and nutty nuances.
We like the beer very much, as it is somewhat reminiscent of beers from the Czech Republic.
Dunkel
The Dunkel is a malty beer with a roasty aroma that makes the hearts of lovers of dark beers beat faster. It is characterized by a harmonious balance of malty notes that can be reminiscent of chocolate and coffee without being overpowering.
Patrick really likes the beer. For me, it hovers somewhere between a light beer and a really dark beer, it has a bit of both flavors. I find it very positive that the beer is not too sweet, which can happen very quickly due to the caramelized malt.
Panke Gold
Panke Gold is a palatable, light beer that impresses with its mild malt sweetness and an alcohol content of 5.1 % vol. Its golden yellow color already gives an idea of how balanced and harmonious this beer tastes.
With an aroma that brings out refreshing citrus notes, it appeals to beginners and connoisseurs alike. The body impresses with a perfect balance between a palatable malt note and a hint of fruit basket.
The dry hopping with Citra hops gives Panke Gold a modern, fresh note and makes it a versatile companion for any occasion.
For me, it is my favorite beer from the Eschenbräu brewery.
Dortmunder Export
Dortmunder Export is a traditional beer that impresses with its balance of malt and hops. With its strong, golden yellow color, an alcohol content of 5.2 % vol. and an original gravity of 13.8 %, it stands for typical beer craftsmanship.
Its aroma is full-bodied and malty, the body smooth and pleasant with a light honey note.
This beer is available seasonally from the end of October to March and is a typical representative of the fall and winter months.
Hefeweizen
Hefeweizen is a fresh, top-fermented beer that is particularly popular in the summer months from March to October. With its light yellow color and an alcohol content of 4.8% by volume, it is a refreshing classic among wheat beers.
Its aroma is dominated by fruity notes such as banana and apple, accompanied by a hint of vanilla.
The fermentation process, which depends on the outside temperature and gives the aromas in each batch an individual note, is particularly exciting. This beer is a must for anyone who wants to enjoy summer in a glass.
For Patrick, who is a fan of Hefeweizen, the beer is simply part of summer and a visit to the beer garden.
Seasonal beers
Every 14 days, Eschenbräu surprises beer fans with new, aromatic seasonal beers that are brewed with a great deal of experimentation and creativity. Whether fruity, spicy or hoppy – the varieties vary depending on the season and the inspiring ideas of the master brewer.
Eschenbräu beer garden and brewery cellar
The beer garden, which seats around 200 people, is open in good weather. You sit under large umbrellas under oak trees and enjoy your beer. I particularly like the fact that you can bring your own picnic. Pretzels and tarte flambée are sold, but nobody minds if you bring your own snack. On the contrary, you can even borrow plates and cutlery.
The Braukeller has around 150 seats. Here you can sit together comfortably and, with a bit of luck, watch the distillation process.
For us, the Eschenbräu is an institution in Wedding that you simply have to go to.
