Silent Move is an event concept in Berlin that brings people together in a very special way. It combines movement, music and exploring the city in a completely new way. And it’s incredibly fun!!!!
The tour begins
At 9 pm, we meet our Silent move tour guide in front of the Kronprinzenpalais in Berlin. Although tour guide is not really the right term. It’s actually our DJ, entertainer and “lead dancer”. Anyone expecting the usual sightseeing tour through Berlin will be surprised.
Before we start, we are all given large headphones. Silent Move is based on the “silent disco” principle. Participants listen to music via wireless headphones, which allows them to dance and party in public without disturbing their surroundings.
Along the way, you will also pass some of the city’s most famous sights. But if you are waiting for lengthy explanations of the sights, you will wait in vain. At most, there is a hint as to where you are, but it’s really all about the music.
Let’s move!
We set off a little tentatively. We are a small group, some of whom know each other quite well. But it still feels strange at first to just start dancing. When I usually walk through the park with music in my ears, I don’t dance either… It’s even stranger to meet the first people without headphones. They don’t listen to a world hit by ABBA and look quite astonished as we move forward jumping, dancing, swinging and following the DJ with his trailer.
For me, it feels like it lasts two songs and after that I don’t care about any headphone-less people. The music boosts my mood and the tiredness I felt in my legs disappears. I dance through Berlin!
Every now and then our DJ tour guide stops and an animation blog follows. Whether it’s fog in front of a church with music to match, a catwalk in front of the Humbodtforum/City Palace or a little light show with flashlights around a fountain, one thing is for sure – there are always people watching and filming, taking photos or just shaking their heads. I had a lot of fun with a little flash mop to YMCA. We briefly discussed the choreography and then danced happily in front of some spectators who actually wanted some peace and quiet on the park bench. Well, they didn’t hear anything, just saw it. We had our fun!
It was a good 2.5 km around the Museum Island. 2.5 km that were barely noticeable due to the dancing and felt like they were covered far too quickly. An astonished glance at the clock told us that we really had danced for almost 90 minutes.
The tour ended in front of a subway station with soap bubbles and a soulful final song that none of us had expected in March. One last dance and then the music faded away. It was beautiful!
Would we do the tour again?
Definitely!
Once we had overcome our initial shyness, the whole tour just put us in a good mood. If you can get over yourself and ignore the stares of others, you’ll have a lot of fun. The great thing is that nobody is forced to dance along. Those who prefer to swing along and just enjoy the music are just as welcome as participants who dance wildly. Everyone is free to go as they please and enjoy their evening.
We will definitely be out and about dancing in Berlin again.
This is what it looks and sounds like when a group is on the road!
