Brandenburg an der Havel
The city of Brandenburg an der Havel is about 70 kilometres from Berlin. By regional express train, you can reach Berlin’s main station in 45 minutes and Potsdam in 25 minutes.
Brandenburg an der Havel is considered the “cradle of the Mark Brandenburg”. The city has three historic city centers: Old Town, New Town and Cathedral Island. The districts are separated by the Havel. On a stroll through the city, you can still discover beautiful houses and should not miss a visit to the cathedral.
The city is part of the European Route of Brick Gothic, which makes it particularly attractive for lovers of medieval architecture. There are over 15 sights to explore. The cathedral on Cathedral Island is one of the oldest buildings in the city and a masterpiece of North German Brick Gothic architecture. It was founded in the 12th century and is an important cultural and religious center of the region. St. Catherine’s Church in the new town is another masterpiece of North German brick Gothic architecture. It towers above the other buildings in the new town and dominates the cityscape with its imposing architecture.
The city is often referred to as the “city in the river” as it is criss-crossed by the Havel and numerous lakes. This makes it a paradise for water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers. Activities such as boating, canoeing and fishing are particularly popular here. The picturesque surroundings also offer numerous opportunities for hiking and cycling tours.
Hiking in beautiful nature along the lakes or extended boat tours on the lakes offer relaxation. Those who enjoy watching animals will find some rare specimens around the extensive water landscape.
Holidays in Brandenburg an der Havel – excursion tips
An exciting and impressive place to learn about steel production in Brandenburg is the Industrial Museum in Brandenburg an der Havel. We passed the museum rather by chance and were thrilled by the visit.
Sculptures don't always have to be huge and big, and if you look a little closer in Brandenburg an der Havel, you can discover what are probably the cutest sculptures. The life-size forest pug can be found in various places around the city and reminds us of Loriot, a native of Brandenburg.
…and a little bit further! Why didn't I do this before … I am completely thrilled after leaving Karl-Heinz and am already thinking about when we can go to Brandenburg an der Havel again.
