District of Elbe-Elster
The district of Elbe-Elster in the south of Brandenburg is a real insider tip for anyone looking for varied nature, exciting industrial culture and relaxing tranquillity.
The district of Elbe-Elster is located in the south of the federal state of Brandenburg. Anyone planning a vacation in this region will experience a wonderfully peaceful time.
The district is characterized in the west and south by the rivers Elbe and Elster, as well as some of their tributaries. The western part of the district borders on Lower Lusatia and the Lower Fläming in the north. A large part of the area is used for agriculture, but there are also beautiful wooded areas.
Here you can still find pure nature and vast landscapes. The Niederlausitzer Heidelandschaft Nature Park is a highlight of the region with extensive forests, flowering heathland (particularly attractive in late summer) and mysterious moorland areas. The area is ideal for hiking and cycling.
Numerous lakes, often former open-cast mining pits, are now popular bathing lakes (e.g. Waldbad Zeischa, Waldsee Bad Erna). The Black Elster and the Elbe offer opportunities for canoeing and birdwatching.
The region also offers fascinating industrial culture and history. The F60 overburden conveyor bridge visitor mine is simply not to be missed. The F60, often referred to as the “horizontal Eiffel Tower”, is a gigantic former overburden conveyor bridge of the lignite industry. You can walk on it and gain fascinating insights into the technology and history of mining. Events and concerts are also held here.
One of the oldest lignite-fired power stations in Europe, the Plessa Adventure Power Station, has been preserved in its original state. Industrial history comes alive here.
The Elbe-Elster district is less crowded than other tourist regions, which makes for a relaxed and authentic vacation experience.

I had the Visitor Mine F60 on my destinations-wishlist for a little while. Now we finally got to go on an excursion to the brown coal opencast mining area in Lusatia.
