Frankfurt (Oder)

Frankfurt (Oder) is located in the federal state of Brandenburg, directly on the German-Polish border. A trip to Frankfurt (Oder) is ideal for history buffs, nature lovers and anyone looking for an authentic German-Polish border town experience off the beaten tourist track.

Frankfurt was once a Hanseatic city on the Oder. Today, shipping in this section of the Oder is only possible when there is enough water. Excursions by boat are usually possible in the summer months.

Brandenburg Karte

The city is a university town. It is home to the Brandenburg State University Viadrina, which opened its doors to students as early as 1506. Famous personalities such as Ulrich von Hutten, the Humboldt brothers and Heinrich von Kleist spent years of study here. Heinrich von Kleist was born in the Oder city in 1777, and today a museum commemorates the artist.

During the Second World War, about 93% of the city was destroyed in the fighting. From the 1950s onwards, many residential areas were rebuilt. The style of the post-war buildings still defines the cityscape today. The remaining historic buildings have been renovated and today show how beautiful the architecture was before the war.

According to the Potsdam Agreement, the Oder became the border river between the GDR and Poland. This led to the separation of Frankfurt and the Dammvorstadt on the other side of the river. The latter was given the name Słubice. The city bridge, which connects the two cities, crosses the Oder and was a border station between them for many years. Today, you can move back and forth between the cities here without controls.

The Oder floodplains offer a beautiful natural landscape that is ideal for walking, cycling and relaxing. There is also Lake Helene, one of the clearest lakes in Brandenburg, which is great for swimming and water sports (although a little outside the city).
