District of Oberspreewald-Lausitz
The district of Oberspreewald-Lausitz, located in the south of Brandenburg, is a region full of contrasts and a true paradise for travelers who want to experience both idyllic nature and exciting industrial culture. Here, the unique water landscape of the Spreewald and the newly created lakes of the Lusatian Lakeland merge into an unforgettable vacation experience.
An absolute highlight is undoubtedly the Spreewald, a UNESCO biosphere reserve whose extensive river system has become a trademark of the district of Oberspreewald-Lausitz. A boat trip through the canals is a must and allows you to immerse yourself in another world.
If you prefer something more active, grab a canoe and explore the waterways on your own. For families, the Spreewelten Bad Lübbenau with its swimming penguins is a special treat.
A formative part of the district is the Lusatian Lakeland. Here, where brown coal was once mined, an impressive artificial lake landscape has developed. Lake Senftenberg is the most famous attraction. With its sandy beaches, it is ideal for swimming, sailing and surfing. The modern Senftenberg town harbor is the perfect starting point for water sports activities or relaxing walks along the shore. Senftenberg also has a lot to offer culturally with the Castle and Fortress Museum, which sheds light on the town’s eventful history.
There are interesting destinations away from the large expanses of water. The industrial history of the region can be experienced at the Lauchhammer Art Casting Museum. In Calau, visitors can discover regional history in the local history museum or take a journey through the vehicle history of the GDR in the Mobile World of the East. Those who want to explore nature on foot or by bike will find charming hiking trails through a gentle hilly landscape in Calauer Schweiz.
Excursion tips in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district
Do you have a bucket list full of things you’d like to experience? One of the items on mine for example is “unusual accommodation”. And a treehouse I’d say counts as unusual accommodation.
