On the way to a spa visit, we turn off the motorway. Out of the corner of my eye, I spot a small sign pointing to a fish sale at the Fishery Berner and quickly note the location in my phone. It’s settled – we’ll stop there on the way back and pick up some fish.
The Fishery Berner
Behind the name Fisherman Berner lies a story rooted in regional fishing tradition. Wolfgang Berner, an experienced inland fisherman, worked for many years in the Werder fishing cooperative. When it was dissolved in 1990, a unique opportunity arose for him: the chance to acquire fishing rights in the Havel River. A bold step that led to the founding of the Fishery in Werder in 1991. Since then, the farm has been run as a family business with a great deal of passion and dedication.

Today, tradition remains at the heart of the business. Father and son Berner run the operation together and, over the years, have turned it into a top tip for culinary excursions in the region.
Delicacies from the Fishery: Freshly Caught and Freshly Smoked
The Fishery Berner stands for quality and variety. Here, you not only get freshly caught fish, some of which comes directly from the surrounding waters, but also high-quality processed fish. What isn’t native to the local waters is carefully sourced to consistently offer a wide selection.
Upon request, the fresh fish is even gutted, descaled, and cleaned on-site. This allows the customer to take it home ready for the kitchen.

A special highlight is the smoked fish. The fish is prepared with great care over an open fire in a special smoking oven. Beech and alder wood are used, giving the fish its unmistakable and particularly fine flavour. We tried it and are certain: no one leaves here without fish!
The Snack Bar: Fish Sandwich Delight Right on the Water
Our actual destination, however, was the snack bar at the Fishery – and we were not disappointed! Freshly prepared fish sandwiches awaited us. Whether with tender matjes (cured herring), tangy Bismarck herring, or other delicious varieties – the selection is huge and makes the decision really difficult. We personally just ordered two different kinds and shared them.

In addition to the fish sandwiches, there is also homemade fish soup, which is perfect for a small snack in between. Of course, there are also cold drinks, which are especially refreshing on warm days.
What makes the Fishery snack bar special is its fantastic location. When the weather is nice, you can enjoy your fish sandwich right by the idyllic fishing lake or find a cosy spot on the banks of the Havel River. The glistening of the sun on the water, the gentle breeze, and the relaxed atmosphere – it’s almost like a little holiday, and all very close to Berlin! A perfect place to unwind and leave everyday life behind.

A Paradise for Anglers: The Fishing Pond
For all anglers, we have a special tip: The Fishery fishing pond is well-stocked with various species of fish such as carp, crucian carp, whitefish, and perch. Fishing is permitted here with a fishing permit, which can be purchased directly on-site.
