Hannover-Linden: A city tour with a lot of street art

Hannover-Linden is a district in Hannover. It is a district full of contrasts; wonderful Gründerzeit style homes and run-down apartment blocks are to be found here as well as trendy quarters and dodgy streets.

But no matter where in the district you are the fascinating street art is everywhere. The street art was also the focus of the city tour we went on as part of the blogger event we came to Hannover for.

Development of the district Hannover-Linden

The village Linden was first mentioned in the 11th century. Big mansions for the wealthy people of Hannover were built here in the first quarter of the 19th century. But also industry grew in Linden and workshops for locomotives and weaving mills settled down here. Lots of workers followed and living space for them was created. Until 1885 Linden was a rural community and a suburb of Hannover. It was given town privileges in April 1885 and became part of Hannover in 1920.

Today, Linden consists of Linden-centre, North and South. 45000 inhabitants, 30% of them with a migratory background, live on an 8.18 km2 area. Hannover-Linden is a lively and ever-changing district, which attracts a multitude of different people. We noticed this great variety firstly because of the many different styles of architecture. Lovely residential areas are only a few streets away from shabby apartment complexes that are in desperate need of a makeover.

Just a little further is an old industrial area that is now used by different artists; here’s the space to create and to party. This is where the scene is.

City tour with an eye for street art

One thing is particularly characteristic for the district and it is everywhere: More or less beautiful street art. Different artists of different styles created (partly commissioned by the city) colourful pieces of work on the walls. As it is with every form of art, beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. But I took some pictures of artwork that I liked quite a bit.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have nearly enough time to discover the district in depth. But it was enough for first impressions that definitely sparked my interest for Hannover. Another visit will certainly follow in the future to discover the city centre, the big mansions and gardens and also the Masch Lake.
