The Christmas market in Schwerin, known as “The Star in the North”, is a unique pre-Christmas experience in Schwerin’s picturesque old town. The market always opens at the end of November with a colorful parade on the south bank of the Pfaffenteich. This is followed by the official opening on the market square.
The illuminated Christmas fir tree stands on the market square and the traditional cutting of the Christmas stollen takes place here on the opening day. The market is open until the end of the year, with the exception of December 24 and 25. Entertainment is provided by a colorful program on a Christmas stage on the historic market square. This is also the location of the large Christmas tree, which lights up children’s eyes with its countless lights.

What makes Schwerin’s Christmas market so special is the variety of attractions and the fairytale atmosphere. At various locations in the old town, including Mecklenburgstraße, Marienplatz and Schlachtermarkt, there are countless lovingly decorated huts and stalls offering culinary delights and handcrafted products. Mecklenburgstraße in particular is known for its fairytale huts. In these you can see and hear scenes from various fairy tales. The fairy tales are played from a tape recorder and we were able to observe one or two children (and adults) listening intently. There is also a children’s tent at the Schlachtermarkt, where various fairytale performances take place and children are invited to do handicrafts and bake.
Another highlight is the ice rink at Pfaffenteich, which invites you to go ice skating. Here, the people of Schwerin do their laps on the ice and many a child learns to glide on the blades.
Schwerin’s Christmas market offers a wonderful mix of traditional crafts, culinary delights, fairytale experiences and a festive atmosphere that enchants visitors of all ages.
