The treetop walk in Heringsdorf is definitely one of the highest excursion destinations on Usedom. Here, visitors of all ages can experience a unique view of the region.
Fancy experiencing Usedom from a completely different perspective? Then a visit to the Usedom treetop walk is just the place for you. We were there just before sunset in winter. It was quite cold, but an unforgettable experience.
From the parking lot, which was very empty out of season, we went into the entrance building. Here you will not only find a small restaurant and the store, but also the ticket office. It is possible to purchase your ticket directly on site, but you can also buy your ticket online in advance.
We quickly went through the turnstile and then we could decide: Elevator or stairs. We climbed the first few meters to the start and later the end of the trail. We were cold, so we climbed the stairs and were warmer by the time we reached the top.
The path
From now on, it was a stepless walk along the wooden path to the observation tower. The path is about 23 meters high and, not counting the tower, is about 780 meters long. I really like the fact that it is made almost entirely of wood and therefore blends in almost seamlessly with the surroundings.
Surroundings is exactly the right keyword. The path leads along the current height of the treetops. This was quite exciting in winter, as there was no foliage to obstruct our view. This meant we could not only look down to the ground, but also into the treetops. We discovered, for example, a bird’s nest that had been covered in snow and might be able to welcome new inhabitants in the spring.
Learning and adventure stations not just for children
As we have seen on other treetop walks, for example in the Czech Republic, Bad Wildbad and the Wartburg-Hainich nature reserve, the providers try to make the path to the observation tower a little more exciting.
For example, there are boards with interesting facts about the regional flora and fauna. There is also a bit of history and geography about Usedom. I really enjoy reading these boards and often learn something new.
I always particularly enjoy the small exercise activities. It’s not just children who can balance at lofty heights or run over wobbly elements.
It goes up the observation tower
The path finally reaches the observation tower. The square tower is 33 meters high. Inside, a ramp leads upwards with a maximum gradient of 6%. Always around the square, each round has a length of 96 meters, we reach the highest point of the tower after 565 meters.
Even during the ascent, a wonderful view opens up before us and with every meter of ascent we can discover more of Usedom. At the top, we are 75 meters above sea level and the view in all four directions is unobstructed and unique. We looked out over wide expanses of forest towards the Achterland. Despite the clouds, the sunset awaited us here.
Although there was only a thin yellow-orange stripe visible, it was still beautiful and if it hadn’t been January and cold, I would even have described it as romantic. I also liked the view over Heringsdorf and the slightly more distant imperial resorts of Ahlbeck and Bansin. But the highlight was the view over the Baltic Sea. What a view that gave me a feeling of vacation and wanderlust.
Wobbly over the net
The tower’s viewing platform is not really a platform at all. There are actually four paths that run around a huge net. In the middle of the tower, with a clear view down to the ground, there is a 50m2 net. You are allowed to walk on it! I tried it out with a slightly queasy feeling. The net is not completely rigid and if there are other people on the net, it wobbles. Much to the amusement of other visitors, I carefully tried to cross the net. It’s a good thing that the holes are quite small – but to be honest, the children were more agile and clearly had more fun than I did.
After a while, we set off again and left the tower. We continued along the path, which eventually ended back at the stairwell and elevator.
Winter highlight
The Usedom treetop walk offers its visitors a very special highlight in winter. As dusk falls, the path and the observation tower are beautifully illuminated. I particularly liked the lighting in the tower. The children we were able to observe found the illuminated animal figures particularly beautiful.
Fun for children
The Usedom treetop walk offers a comic rally for children. Before you start your visit, you can buy a small activity booklet for €2.50 in the store.
During the visit you pass various task boards. You enter the solutions to the tasks in your booklet. If you have completed all the tasks as correctly as possible and hand in the booklet in the store at the end of the visit, the children receive a small surprise.
Is a visit to the Usedom treetop walk worthwhile?
We think it’s worth a visit at any time of year and, above all, several times. In winter we had a unique experience and in summer the view over Usedom would certainly be a completely new impression. We will definitely be back!
