Right upon my arrival in idyllic Bad Sassendorf and my first stroll through the green spa park, one building immediately catches my eye: The Schnitterhof. With its beautiful, historic half-timbered facade, it is not only a fantastic photo motif but also a genuine feel-good hotel where I felt completely at home right from the very first moment.
A half-timbered house on a journey: 5,673 individual parts with historical charm
As early as 1765, the Kallewegge family founded an agricultural farm in the Westphalia region. The name “Schnitterhof” is a direct homage to the past. Around 150 years ago, the building served as simple accommodation for harvest workers, the so-called “Schnitter” (reapers).
In the 1970s, the original farmhouse (dismantled in Niedermassen near Unna at the time) was literally taken apart piece by piece. More precisely, into 5,673 numbered individual parts. These were transported to Bad Sassendorf and faithfully rebuilt there from 1978 onwards with the utmost care.
In 1982, the farm finally opened its doors as a hotel. Keeping this knowledge in mind gives the creaking of the old floorboards its very own, historical charm.
My room at the Schnitterhof: Modern comfort behind old wooden floorboards
As I step into the hotel reception, I find myself in a bright, inviting, and very modern-designed lobby. The check-in goes pleasantly fast, the staff is super friendly, and I am even personally shown the right way to my room.
My room itself impresses with a stylish, contemporary look. I found the small windows particularly charming, offering a view of the adjacent modern conference and wellness area. The room provided exactly what you need after a long day in the fresh Westphalian air: a wonderfully comfortable bed that ensures a deep, restful night.
It is particularly pleasant that fast Wi-Fi, a safe, and a flat-screen TV are part of the standard equipment. Even the first fragrant coffee in the morning is provided right in the room. My personal highlight, however, was the bathroom: the shower is completely walk-in, everything was sparkling clean and modernly tiled. Waking up is fun this way!
Good to know: The Schnitterhof is not a tiny hotel; the rooms are spread across various building complexes. But don’t worry, thanks to the well-thought-out architecture and closed connecting corridors, no one has to leave the building to get to the wellness area in their bathrobe or to breakfast in the morning.
Wellness & Deceleration: My little oasis in the hotel
Bad Sassendorf is known far beyond the region as a first-class health resort – and the Schnitterhof picks up on this theme seamlessly. If you long for pure tranquility, you don’t even have to leave the hotel for a break. The in-house wellness area is a real highlight.
Besides a heated indoor pool, which is exclusively available to hotel guests, there is a sauna landscape with a steam bath and a relaxation area. After a sauna session, you can wonderfully relax on the large outdoor terrace, take a deep breath, and enjoy the peace and quiet.
If you prefer to be a bit more active, you can work out in the fitness room. My tip: Treat yourself to one of the massages offered in the spa area. From the classic full-body massage to deeply relaxing hot-stone or fragrant herbal stamp massages, everything is offered here to loosen up the muscles.
Morning delight: The Schnitterhof breakfast leaves nothing to be desired
The next morning, a fantastic breakfast buffet awaited me, absolutely convincing both visually and in taste. Whether honey straight from the honeycomb or freshly prepared egg dishes, truly nothing was missing. My perfect day always starts with the aroma of fresh coffee, crisp fruit, and muesli. I was absolutely not disappointed in this regard either. I was especially happy about the fine, fresh fish, which brought a noble change to my breakfast routine.
Breakfast takes place in the hotel’s own restaurant. I really liked the visual appeal of the restaurant area. For example, there is a large hall with an inviting fireplace where groups like to sit, but also small cozy seating areas that invite intimacy. Those who like to sit outside in good weather can use the large terrace.
I didn’t eat at the hotel restaurant. But a look at the menu reveals that Westphalian classics are reinterpreted here.
Out into nature: Discovering Bad Sassendorf
A stay at the Schnitterhof can be perfectly combined with exploring the spa town. The hotel is located practically right next to the beautiful, expansive spa park. An absolute must is a walk to the imposing graduation tower, where you can breathe in the salty, healthy sea air right in the middle of Westphalia. The well-known Börde Therme is also just a few minutes’ walk away and invites you to even more relaxation.

By car:
Via the A44 (Soest-Ost or Werl exit) or the A2. Bad Sassendorf is very well connected and the hotel is signposted within the town.
By train:
Travelling by train is very straightforward. Bad Sassendorf railway station is only about a 10-minute walk from the hotel.
Parking
The hotel has around 85 on-site parking spaces, which are allocated subject to availability. The cost is approximately €7.00 per night. Electric vehicle charging points are available (approximately €4.00 per charge).
Alternatively, there are free public car parks nearby, for example at the nearby Börde Therme.

Can the wellness area be used before check-in or after check-out?
As a rule, the indoor pool is available exclusively to guests during their regular stay. If you’d like to extend your wellness day after check-out, we recommend visiting the Börde Therme, which is just a few metres away.
