Holiday in Münsterland
When you think of the Münsterland region, a very specific image comes to mind: a gently rolling, green park landscape where bicycles are the favorite mode of transport and a magnificent moated castle seems to be waiting around every bend. And that is exactly what awaits the vacationer here. This wonderfully beautiful region is located in North Rhine-Westphalia, right on the border with the Netherlands.
The area is divided into several sections, distinguished by their geographical features. Münster is the only major city in the Münsterland and is surrounded by the “Kernmünsterland” (Core Münsterland).
Those who spend their vacation here will find hilly elevations of up to 188 meters in the Baumberge hills. The “Westmünsterland” borders directly on the Netherlands, and here too, several ridges create a varied landscape for hiking and cycling. In contrast, those who vacation in the “Nordmünsterland” will mainly find flat, sandy landscapes that make cycling very pleasant.

Münsterland is Germany’s undisputed number one cycling region. A network of over 4,500 kilometers of excellently developed and signposted cycle paths runs through the entire region. The flat to slightly hilly topography makes cycling a pleasure. Whether you pedal from one magnificent moated castle to the next on the famous 100 Castles Route, follow idyllic river courses, or simply take a spontaneous ride through picturesque villages – here, the journey is the destination.
The density of castles, manor houses, and especially moated castles in Münsterland is impressive. Majestic and often surrounded by idyllic gardens, they tell stories from centuries past. Among the absolute highlights are:
- Burg Hülshoff: The birthplace of the famous poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, which today houses a museum and invites visitors to take a stroll in its park.
- Schloss Nordkirchen: Often referred to as the “Westphalian Versailles,” it impresses with its huge Baroque complex.
- Burg Vischering: One of the best-preserved moated castles in Germany, which looks like something out of a picture book with its round main castle and surrounding moat.
Holiday in Münsterland
Cycling from Billerbeck in the Münsterland - we were on the road with rental bikes and made two nice trips. A beautiful and relaxing way to discover a region.
During our bicycle tours in the Münsterland region, we have of course also dealt with tour planning. So far, we have always spontaneously driven from place to place, without paying attention to designated routes. This time, of course, we wanted to take a closer look at the well-developed cycling network in Münsterland and test out…
