Discover Soest: a holiday combining the Middle Ages and nature

The small town of Soest in North Rhine-Westphalia is still a real hidden gem for vacationers. Here, you can enjoy a relaxing vacation, soak up some urban charm, and explore the beautiful region.

Geographically, the city is located in the so-called Soester Börde, a particularly fertile plain that is part of the Westphalia region. To put it in perspective: Soest lies about 50 kilometers east of Dortmund. Directly south of Soest (only about 10 kilometers away) lies the Sauerland low mountain range. The city is also considered the gateway to the Sauerland.

What makes Soest special is its cityscape. It is characterized by historic half-timbered buildings and the greenish-shimmering green sandstone from which many of the old churches and walls are built. Anyone strolling through the half-timbered alleys feels as if time has stood still in the Middle Ages. The historic city wall is one of the city’s highlights. Large sections of the rampart wall are still preserved. It’s a wonderful place to take a walk along the wall. This leads you to the Osthofentor, the last of what were once ten city gates.

Culinary-wise, Soest is characterized by Westphalian cuisine. Hearty dishes such as Pfefferpotthast (a traditional beef dish), broad beans with bacon, or Möpkenbrot (a blood sausage specialty) can be found in the town’s long-established taverns. Soest is the home of pumpernickel. The famous black bread has been baked here by the Haverland Bakery since 1570.

Nature lovers will find perfect conditions for hiking or biking nearby. Lake Möhnesee is only about 10 kilometers away. The “Westphalian Sea” is perfect for sailing, swimming, biking, or taking in the impressive Möhne Dam.
