If you come to EdelSteinLand, you enter a region where everything revolves around gemstones and jewelry. Gemstone lovers can discover one or the other stone during hikes in the beautiful landscape, which holds a surprise inside.
IIt is no coincidence that numerous gemstone craftsmen have settled here. You can visit many of them in historic and modern processing plants and watch them at work. And who knows, you might even discover and buy a jewelry creation – the range on offer is diverse and varied. All you have to do is follow the German Gemstone Route, which connects agate and gemstone cutters with the jewelry and metalware industry.
One of the most famous attractions is the historic copper mine in Fischbach, where millions of colorful, sparkling crystals create a magical atmosphere. The medieval town of Herrstein with its narrow streets and half-timbered houses is also an absolute must-see.
If you are more drawn to nature, EdelSteinLand is just the place for you. Here you can go hiking in the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park. Idar-Oberstein is located on the edge of the southern Hunsrück, in the valley of the Nahe. The town has become known worldwide as a jewellery and gemstone town and continues to captivate gemstone lovers to this day.
It's hard to imagine a holiday in EdelSteinLand without taking a look at the topic of gemstones! We were on the lookout for clues in the region and visited interesting places related to the theme of gemstones.
The town of Fischbach is only about 9 kilometres from Idar-Oberstein. Here in the southern Hunsrück is the historic Fischbach copper mine, which can be visited all year round.
The Wildenburg Wildlife Enclosure is located near Kempfeld below the Wildenburg. Here the visitor can observe various native animal species during a wonderful excursion.
Probably one of the best-known fashion jewelry factories in EdelSteinLand was the Jakob Bengel chain and fashion jewelry factory in the Oberstein district. Today, you can visit the Jakob Bengel industrial monument and take a look inside the former production facility on a guided tour.

Arrival
By plane
The nearest major international airport is in Frankfurt am Main. From there, you can take the regional train to Idar-Oberstein in just under 2 hours.
A little smaller, but also with international connections, is the airport Frankfurt-Hahn. Here mainly low-cost airlines take off and land. This airport is even closer to Idar-Oberstein and is served by the regional bus 351.
In Idar-Oberstein there is a small commercial airport for small private airplanes with a grass runway.
By train
There is a train station in Idar-Oberstein, which is located on the Saarbrücken-Frankfurt railroad line. Regional trains stop here every hour.
By car
EdelSteinLand is located in a rather mountainous region with many narrow valleys. To get there from the north/south take the A61, exit Waldlaubersheim and Dreieck Nahetal – exit Idar-Oberstein. From the west/Benelux/France you can reach the region via the A1/A62, exit Idar-Oberstein. From the feeder highways, the B41 federal highway runs in a west-east direction and the B422 to the north in the region. Otherwise, there is a well-developed network of smaller and larger country roads between the villages.
By bicycle
The Nahe cycle path runs through the region.

By car
By car, you can travel flexibly in the region. If you arrive without your own car, you will find an e-car rental station in Idar-Oberstein, where you can reserve a car via Flinkster. In the region you will find several charging stations for electric vehicles.
By bus
There are connections throughout the region with buses from the local provider. From the train station, all parts of the city are served. The buses run regularly, but not frequently.
By taxi
Cabs are usually available in front of the Idar-Oberstein train station and at the marketplace in Idar.
On foot
During a vacation in the EdelSteinLand you will be attracted by wonderful hiking trails. However, the individual districts and smaller towns are quite far from each other, so that they are difficult to reach on foot.
Guest Card
With the guest and family card you can visit 13 sights in the region at a reduced entrance fee. The guest card can be purchased for 2,- € (valid for one person), the family card costs 5,-€ (2 adults + accompanying children).
At the participating establishments, the adult then pays the group admission price, children up to 14 years receive free admission.
The cards are valid for 1 year.
