As in every city we visit, we set out to find breweries, beer gardens and brewpubs. Finding a beer garden in Magdeburg where we felt comfortable and the beer tasted good was done quickly.
Magdeburg beer garden – Schweizer Milchkuranstalt
In Fürstenwallpark, behind the cathedral, there is a small tea house. Many years ago, the women of the Hauswaldt family of factory owners used to drink their tea in this little house. At that time, however, the house was still in a different place.
The family had been resident in Magdeburg since 1833 and ran first a cichorin and later a chocolate factory. The company became known nationwide for its products.
Since 2014, the tea house has been in its current location and bears the name “Schweizer Milchkuranstalt”. It was given the name because over 120 years ago, one of the first milk spas stood on this very spot. Schoolchildren were given free milk to drink there once a day.
Today, the beautiful tea house beckons with coffee, tea, cake and occasionally a barbecue. If you like, you can bring your own food. But there is also freshly tapped beer to drink. And that’s exactly why we were drawn to this beer garden in Magdeburg.
The keg had just been freshly connected, we sat in the sun under a tree and enjoyed a Lindhorster beer on tap. The brewery, which was only founded in 2007, is located in Colbitz, not far from Magdeburg. A very drinkable naturally cloudy beer, ideal for a beer garden.
For us, a great beer garden in Magdeburg where you feel comfortable and can end the day.

Hummels Brewery
Hummels Breweryis located on a busy street and yet the small beer garden in Magdeburg is wonderfully quiet.
Fortunately, we sat down under an umbrella there, otherwise we would have got really wet during a surprising, albeit short, rain shower. If you want to be on the safe side, you can take a seat in the cosy dining room.
The menu is typical for a brewery, hearty and meat-heavy. We opted for a Magde “Burger” and a Pulled Chicken Burger with fries. The portions were big and I was glad I didn’t order any side dishes. It would have been too much. It tasted very good, we were satisfied and full.
The beer we had chosen could not have been more different.
Hummels Kellerbier is an unrounded, naturally cloudy beer. The taste was rather soft with little bitterness, so very drinkable. The beer comes from the Hummel brewery, which is located near Bamberg.
The Sudenburg Ruby captivates with a dreamy ruby colour. I found the taste slightly caramel and smoky. It tasted quite strong.
The Sudenburger Helles smells very malty and tastes like a typical Pilsner.
