If you drive out of town for about 5 minutes, you will find the Weißenfels all-weather toboggan run on the B87. We were curious to see what was in store for us. In addition to tobogganing in summer, various leisure activities are offered for every age group. We had a look around the grounds and of course tried out some of the highlights with a lot of fun.
Tobogganing on the Weißenfels all-weather toboggan run
In the middle of the meadow is a metal frame with rails that reminds me a lot of a roller coaster. You can whiz down the 800-metre track at a maximum of 40 km/h on red double-seaters.
I am curious to see what awaits me and climb into one of the red sledges.
You are secured with a harness and then get a short briefing. I can regulate the speed myself, I have two brake levers on the side of the sledge.
Then it starts like a roller coaster. A belt takes me a little higher so that the sledge gets some speed right away.
And then the ride starts – 7 curves, 4 steep bends and 3 tunnels later, a sign tells me that the ride ends and that I should slow down.
Fortunately, I don’t have to get off, but am pulled back to the start like in a cable car. Once there, I look at the speedometer and realise that I wasn’t travelling as fast as I thought I would be. There was still a lot of room for improvement! Okay, I had to do a second run – a little ambition plays a role, because I can’t go slower than the kids in front of me!
For the second tour, I resolve to really only brake in an emergency. The wind sweeps through my face and although I have certainly hardly braked – I was only marginally faster than in the first run. I admit, I need to practise!
One ride Patrick and I took together on a toboggan and had a lot of fun! A great experience that is fun for every age group and night sledding is also offered on certain dates.
Archery on the all-weather toboggan run in Weißenfels
After a few rides on the all-weather toboggan run, we go archery.
Under expert guidance, I am first shown how to insert the arrow and then how to draw the bow. It looks easier than it is. The arrow already has a life of its own when I put it in and wants to go somewhere else, following gravity.
A small correction in my movement and it goes a little easier. Yes, and then comes the tensioning of the string, the correct stance, the correct arm position and the aiming. Phew, by the time all that is right my arms are already tired and I haven’t even shot yet. Now I know which training sessions are urgently needed from now on.
Shooting is done with aluminium arrows and a sport bow, there are left- and right-handed bows, children’s bows – so there is something for everyone.
Even though the easy target is only a good 10 metres away, you need a lot of strength and accuracy to hit the target. For “experts” there is of course also the possibility to shoot at targets further away. To be honest, 10 metres is enough for me. After just a few arrows – all of which landed somewhere on the target – I am glad to be able to relax my muscles a little and watch Patrick try.
Now that we have been able to prove our marksmanship with bow and arrow, we switch to shooting with the crossbow. I find it difficult to aim at the target, but it is a great advantage that you need much less strength than before with the bow. I also like this kind of sport, but archery was more to my taste.
What else can you experience?
If you fancy a game of mini-golf, you can play a game at the Weißenfels all-weather toboggan run. The mini-golf course at the facility consists of 18 holes. The very well-maintained courses offer different levels of difficulty. I particularly liked the visual design of the obstacles.
Fancy a round of tractor driving? On a meadow there is the possibility to drive a ride-on mower. Younger children drive here in the company of older persons (from 14 years), from 14 years you may also gain your first driving experience on your own.
Barbecuing even in winter? We took a look at the Lapland barbecue huts that you can rent here. What a cosy place. The huts, which vary in size, have a barbecue in the middle and comfortable benches on the outside walls. I immediately fell in love with the ambience and would have loved to stay there.
