During a walk along the Neißstraße in Görlitz, we discovered tables and chairs under some arches of a house where guests were sitting with glasses of beer. The Görlitz Bierblume brewery magically attracted us and we stopped in.
We passed through a cosy and stylish guest room into a small courtyard with a beer garden. The brewery had just opened its doors and it was still quite quiet here. But that changed quickly and the tables filled up little by little.
The small brewery Bierblume is run by Diana and Alex, who brew their beers themselves with much love and good taste. Before we ordered one of their beers, we first had a look at what’s on offer in the extensive menu. They offer limited seasonal beers, such as the Braggot (Scottish honey, black) in February and the Hop Junkie (American style IPA) in August.
In addition to the traditional beers, you will also find innovative offerings.
Super cool, the menu not only lists the beers, but also tells you something about the hops and malt used, the smell and taste for each offer. Of course, the original wort and alcohol content are also given for each beer.
Knowing this, it was difficult for us to make a selection.
3 beers from the Bierblume
I first decided on the beer of the month for June – the Görlitzer Weiße with syrup. For me as a Berliner who likes to drink the “real hand-mixed” Berliner Weiße, it is always very exciting to try out whether another weisse can keep up. The Görlitzer Weiße is described in the menu as sour and top-fermented, offered with and without syrup and has an alcohol content of 3.3 %vol.
The beer met my taste! A wonderful beer for the summer, light and fresh, not too sweet (amount of syrup was well dosed) and it could very much keep up with the Berlin beer.
Patrick chose a beer that belongs to the traditional malty draught beers. He ordered “Das Zeugel”. The brewer used Munich and Pilsner malt and Saaz and Hallertau hops for the unbubbled young beer. The beer has 4.2 % alcohol by volume. The beer already smelled good, a bit like caramel and the first sip also tasted good, soft and not too bitter, a bit like honey. The second sip tasted almost better, an aromatic full-bodied beer that “drinks away” well.
Finally, we chose a beer with a completely different flavour. Named after the great Görlitz town fire of 1717, we decided on the “1717” smoked beer.
Already the colour of the beer showed us that here was a real smoked beer on the table. The smell of smoked bacon caught my nose. It is actually said that smoked beer only hits the taste of the drinker after the second glass, because it has a strong flavour. The 1717 tastes almost like a typical smoked beer, but I found the taste soft and more pleasant. With 5.5% alcohol by volume, the beer is a little stronger.
We enjoyed it and regretted not being able to spend more time in Görlitz to try the other beers.
