The former main post office building is located directly on Leipzig’s Augustusplatz. Today, you can stay at the Motel One Leipzig-Post right in the heart of the city.
As early as the 18th century, the area where stagecoaches and postal riders arrived in Leipzig and could take a break was located directly on today’s Augustusplatz. Later, the Reichspost used the site. The main post office building in Leipzig was built in 1964. From the outside, the building exudes the charm of that time. For years, the headquarters for telegraphy, parcel and letter deliveries was located here.
Today, the listed building is used by the Motel One hotel chain. As soon as we enter the hotel, we notice that the design of the building has been adapted to its former function. Whether it’s an old postal bicycle, postcard collages or a matching wall design, everything looks just right. When we are greeted in a very friendly manner, it is clear to us – we will feel at home!
What kind of rooms are there?
Motel One Leipzig-Post only has double rooms, which can of course also be booked for single use. All rooms are air-conditioned and have a flat-screen TV, a desk and a private bathroom with a shower. The Wi-Fi reception in our room was very good.
Our room was situated facing the quiet inner courtyard. At most a pedestrian walked along here, we didn’t notice anything of the car traffic on the main road.
The room was a good size and the box-spring bed was simply fantastic. We had an excellent night’s sleep and were able to start an exciting day in Leipzig feeling refreshed.
How is breakfast?
Breakfast is served on one of the top floors. In the large, elongated room, you can choose whether you want to sit at a long table or at small tables with comfortable armchairs. At the back, we opt for small tables for two with a bench and chair. The design concept, which is reminiscent of the former post office, is also clearly visible in this room.
If it had been warmer in Leipzig, we would have had the opportunity to have breakfast on a narrow balcony. There are a few tables there with a view of the Gewandhaus.
The breakfast buffet really left nothing to be desired. There are mainly organic products on offer and the needs of allergy sufferers or special dietary requirements are also catered for (it’s best to ask when you check in so that everything is available the next morning).
Tip: The room was open all day during our stay. It’s a great place to work or enjoy a short break on the balcony.
Motel One Leipzig-Post: a bar with a view
The bar is located on the top floor of the hotel. As soon as you step out of the elevator, you are reminded of the old function of the building. A whole wall of letterboxes in a wide variety of designs – I’ve never seen anything like it before. I like it and I think it’s a great idea!
Of course, the bar serves a wide variety of drinks, which you can enjoy in a cozy and stylish setting. My personal highlight, however, is the balcony. Here, too, you can sit and enjoy the end of the day while watching the hustle and bustle on Augustusplatz. The view is particularly impressive in the evening, when the lights on the Gewandhaus in Leipzig and around the square come on.
What else is on offer?
The Motel One Leipzig-Post has meeting rooms and a fitness studio.
Those arriving by car can use the hotel’s paid parking spaces. As there are only a limited number available, you should reserve these in advance.
