A really unusual overnight stay can be found in Schöneck in the Vogtland. Spending the night in a Tinyhouse is already something special, but spending the night in a sea container was a wonderful time-out for us and a unique experience.
Schöneck in the Vogtland is, as far as its vacation accommodations are concerned, actually better known for the large former “Ferien- und Erholungsheim Karl Marx” (today IFA-Hotel) with its striking building. If you prefer to spend the night in a somewhat unusual way, you will find a dreamlike accommodation below the hotel, which simply thrilled us.
Arrival at the sea container
We went by car to Schöneck in the Vogtland. To get to the accommodation, it is best to drive to the IFA Hotel and put your car in the large parking garage. With the parking ticket, we went first to the tourist information. This is located, if you walk in the direction of the hotel, in a small building on the right side of the street. There you can pay the parking ticket at special rates and also clarify whether you want to leave the car there for the entire booking time or drive in and out.
Then we walked on to the location of the sea containers. To do this, walk across the grounds of the hotel, past the climbing garden in the direction of Bike Welt Schöneck. At the top station of the chairlift, an unpaved path between Bike Welt and cow meadow (ski slope in winter) then leads down into the valley. After about 500 meters you reach the three sea containers.
We carried our luggage from the parking garage. If you want to save yourself some walking, you can drive onto the site by car and unload your luggage. More detailed information about this can be found in the video.
Welcome to the sea container
In total there are three BERGHEIM sea containers where you can stay overnight. Two small 12 sqm containers for a maximum of 3 people and one large 20 sqm container for a maximum of 6 people.
We had chosen the small 12 sqm container “Flat”, which is located under the large container and thus has a partially covered terrace. Through the terrace you can also get to the entrance door in the container. Via an access code, which you get sent in advance, you can open the door just in time for the start of the booking. In the container you will then find a key that allows later access without any problems (an opening via app with the cell phone is also possible).
12 sqm is not big and I was really surprised how well you can divide this size. Not once did I feel that the sea container was too cramped or that I lacked space.
The container has large glass fronts and is so wonderfully bright inside. Part of the window surfaces can be darkened with a curtain, but there is also the possibility to close the metal doors.
Overnight stay in sea container
What can I say – our time in the sea container was a dream. We cooked, enjoyed, read, chilled, slept, laughed and listened to the silence. If you looked out the window, you could enjoy soothing cow TV. What’s more relaxing than watching a cow graze?
After the first overnight stay in the sea container, we woke up in the morning and rarely have I been so well-rested. At night it was so quiet and dark that for us big-city kids it was already “eerie” to hear a night bird or the wind rustling in the trees. No street or airplane noise, a rest for the noise-ridden ears. If it is never really dark in a big city, it was almost lightless in Schöneck. There you could see the eyes of a cat creeping by in the night flashing and fireflies flying.
We liked the time so much that we would have loved to stay a few days longer. For us pure relaxation and we have found that we manage well in a small space.
