Traveling in Schleswig-Holstein

Schleswig-Holstein is the northernmost federal state in Germany. Nestled between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, this region offers a unique mix of coastal landscapes, cultural highlights and culinary delights. Whether beach vacation, active vacation or cultural discovery trips – Schleswig-Holstein has something for everyone.

The west of the federal state is characterized by the North Sea coast and is best known for the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, visitors can discover the fascinating and unique flora and fauna on a guided mudflat hike. The tides create a dynamic landscape that is unique in the world. The North Frisian Islands, including Sylt, Amrum and Föhr, are a particular highlight. Sylt, the “Queen of the North Sea”, attracts visitors with miles of sandy beaches, exclusive restaurants and a relaxed atmosphere. Those who prefer a quieter pace should visit Amrum with its endless dunes or Föhr, the “green island”, which is known for its thatched Frisian houses and family atmosphere. A visit to the Halligen, small marsh islands without dyke protection, is also a unique experience. Here, time seems to stand still and you can enjoy nature in its most pristine form.

Schleswig-Holstein

The Baltic Sea borders Schleswig-Holstein to the east. The Baltic coast boasts charming seaside resorts, fine sandy beaches and historic towns. Timmendorfer Strand and Travemünde are popular hotspots for beach vacationers with a touch of luxury. Places such as Grömitz and Dahme are more family-friendly, with flat beaches and leisure facilities. Another highlight is the Kiel Fjord, where visitors can experience the maritime side of Schleswig-Holstein. The state capital of Kiel is known for Kiel Week, one of the largest sailing events in the world. Sailors and onlookers from all over the world meet here every year to enjoy the unique atmosphere. The romantic old town of Lübeck, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also worth a visit. The Hanseatic city, famous for its marzipan, delights visitors with its medieval architecture and narrow streets.

A vacation in Schleswig-Holstein is not complete without sampling the regional cuisine. Fresh fish, crabs and matjes are at the top of the menu. A classic is the Finkenwerder plaice, traditionally prepared with bacon and onions. The red fruit jelly with vanilla sauce is also a must for those who like it sweet. A special highlight is the coastal brewery tradition: try a Frisian beer or a fine rum from Flensburg, a reminder of the region’s great past as a trading center.

North Sea coast Heligoland

A day on Heligoland

I went to Heligoland before, as a teenager with my field hockey team. I don’t remember too much from that trip so it was about time to boost my memory and go on a day trip to the island in the North Sea.
Heligoland is about 40 kilometres away from mainland Germany in the German Beigh and is part of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Only some 1500 people live on the island but countless tourists are ferried over on many ships during the summer month
