After lunch is before dinner and of course cake and ice cream fit in between! So it’s time to eat cake on Föhr!
Is there a typical cake on Föhr?
There is no such thing as “the” Föhr cake – but over the years, a few classics have become established in the region that you can almost always get.
Frisian cake(Friesentorte) The Friesentorte is an absolute classic in North Friesland and is also very popular on Föhr. It consists of several layers of puff pastry filled with cream and plum jam.
Apple pie Apple pie is another favorite on Föhr, often made with apples from the region. Variants such as covered apple pie or apple crumble pie can be found in many cafés.
Poppy seed cake (Mohnkuchen) Poppy seed cake is a highlight on Föhr. It is often served warm with ice cream and whipped cream.
Frisian butter cake (Friesischer Butterkuchen) Butter cake is a simple but incredibly tasty cake that is often sprinkled with almonds and sugar. It is a typical pastry in northern Germany and is also popular on Föhr.
Eating cake on Föhr
There are many cafés in the towns on Föhr that offer cakes. However, many of them only open their doors in season or have limited opening hours in the off-season.
Föhr is not an easy place for visitors who, like me, pay almost exclusively by card. The restaurants and cafés in particular are almost exclusively cash only. I asked several providers and always got the same answer: “poor reception, devices don’t work on the island”. So always have enough money in your pocket if you want to eat cake on Föhr!
Stellys Hüüs
Stellys Hüüs combines a café, pottery and tea store in a historic Frisian house. It is located in Oldsum in a thatched Frisian house dating back to 1837 and combines Frisian tradition with a cozy country house style.
The café is no longer an insider tip and is one of the most popular places on Föhr. It is often recommended as a “must visit” for vacationers on the island and is correspondingly well frequented. Even out of season, it was not easy to find a seat.
The restaurant is divided into many small interconnected rooms. It’s quaint, cozy and almost a bit like a huge living room. I really like the fact that there are also small seating areas in the corners, from which I would have preferred not to get up.
Stellys Hüüs offers a selection of cakes and tarts baked fresh daily, including highlights such as gooseberry meringue tart, warm apple pie and baked apple with vanilla sauce. My tip: the gooseberry meringue tart. The slice of cake was big and it tasted good too!
The café also offers a selection of high-quality teas that can be enjoyed on site or taken home as a souvenir.

Café im Apfelgarten
The Café im Apfelgarten is a cozy café located in an old barn in Oldsum. Rustic wooden benches, large tables and antique-looking lamps create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
The café places a special focus on sustainability and regionality. For example, the eggs come from free-range hens from Oldsum. The café offers a large selection of homemade cakes and classics such as rice pudding and red fruit jelly. In addition to cakes, there are also savory dishes such as onion tart, soups and salads.

Café at Wyk airport
Not so long ago, this small café right by Wyk Airport was an insider tip. Today it is advisable to reserve a table at certain times. You can also have a good meal here and not just eat cake on Föhr!
The view of the runway with small planes creates a special atmosphere and with a bit of luck you might even see a plane land or take off.
German cuisine is offered with a large selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes. Of course, there are also cakes and desserts. Some of the homemade cakes and tarts are also vegan, lactose-free and gluten-free.

Cafe Milchbar
Café Milchbar is a well-known café and restaurant in Wyk on Föhr, located directly on the spa promenade on Sandwall. There is a lovely outdoor terrace from which you can watch the hustle and bustle on the promenade.
The café is particularly popular with visitors for its rice pudding, which is said to be one of the best on the island. They also serve cakes and a great breakfast.
Föhrer Teestube
The Föhrer Teestube & Café is a must for tea lovers and cake fans on Föhr. The café is located in Nieblum on the Pergande farm. The farm also offers attractions such as a candle barn and a golf course.
The tea room is known for its large selection of tea specialties and homemade cakes. Vegan and gluten-free options are also available. The fresh waffles and delicious cakes are particularly popular.

Eiscafé Cappuccino
The Cappuccino ice cream parlor is an ice cream and waffle house in the heart of Nieblum. It is located in an old Frisian house. The sales room is very small and the queue at the ice cream counter is always long.
The ice cream parlor is known for its homemade premium ice cream, which has been produced for over 15 years. I ate ice cream here. The selection of flavors was good. I would have liked something more ‘experimental’, perhaps a flavor that is only available on Föhr. But while I was enjoying my ice cream, I could see what other guests were ordering. It was almost only the classics like chocolate or something fruity. I think that perhaps the audience is missing for “experiments”.
In addition to ice cream, the café also offers freshly baked waffles, which are particularly popular and also tasted very good.
As there is hardly any seating in the sales room, guests can also enjoy their ice cream or dessert outside in beach chairs.

Café Steigleder
Café Steigleder is a traditional café in Wyk on Föhr, located directly on the beautiful beach promenade at Sandwall 28. It is known for its cozy atmosphere and it really has flair. When we entered the very well-filled dining room, I was quite surprised. It was a little leap back in time, to the days of coffee house culture as I know it from Austria. The only difference was – from the window you can see the sea and not the mountains!
There is a large selection of homemade cakes and tarts as well as hearty dishes. Particularly popular are: Friesentorte, apple strudel with ice cream, raspberry meringue tart and Frankfurter Kranz.
I was overwhelmed by the wide selection of coffee and tea specialties, including cappuccino (with or without cream) and hot chocolate. I only wanted a very simple black tea and could choose from numerous options.
