Culinary opinions differ on fish sandwiches – some love them, others dislike them. But where better to eat fresh fish than by the sea? For us, a fish roll on Föhr is simply part of a vacation on the island.

The freshness of the fish is the most important thing in a fish sandwich. The fish should not only be freshly caught or well stored, but should also retain its natural taste. Fresh fish has a firm consistency and a pleasant, not too intense smell.
The preparation of the fish is crucial and it is worth taking a look before you buy a fish sandwich on Föhr.
Smoked fish (e.g. mackerel or salmon) should be tender and aromatic.
Matjes should taste mild and not too salty.
Deep-fried fish should be crispy and not too greasy.
The bread roll should be fresh, slightly crispy and not too soft so that it holds the topping well without becoming soggy. Salmon rolls For those who like it a little more sophisticated, there are salmon rolls. These are topped with smoked salmon and often finished with a light cream sauce or dill. They are one of the most popular options for a slightly more luxurious fish roll.

Klatt’s Fischladen (Wyk auf Föhr)
Klatt’s Fischladen is a good address for fresh fish and tasty fish rolls in Wyk auf Föhr. Especially the combination of fish store and bistro makes it a versatile place for fish lovers.
The store is located right next to a supermarket parking lot and looks more like a snack bar from the outside. But this is deceptive when you step inside the store. Klatt’s Fischladen is a fish store that sells fresh fish and seafood directly. It is a place to go for locals and tourists looking for high-quality fish products. In addition to selling fish, the store also offers dishes such as fish sandwiches.
In addition to fish sandwiches, I also tried rolled pancakes and freshly made fish salads. I really enjoyed it!

Käpt’n Nolte (Nieblum auf Föhr)
Käpt’n Nolte is known for its fish and delicatessen. With fresh fish products, delicious fish sandwiches and hot dishes, the store offers a wide selection for every taste. The high quality makes it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
The fish sandwiches are always freshly prepared and ideal for a snack in between meals, especially when you are walking through Nieblum, for example.

Fischspezialitäten Scheel
Fischspezialitäten Scheel is a traditional fish store and snack bar in Wyk on Föhr, which has been known for its fresh fish products and delicious fish dishes for over 25 years. Scheel offers a selection of fresh fish specialties, including crabs, plaice fillets and other regional fish varieties. The freshly prepared crab rolls are particularly popular.
Opinions on Scheel fish specialties vary. While some guests describe the fish rolls as “delicious” and the best on Föhr, there are also critical voices. I ate a fish roll there that tasted very good. I particularly liked the warm roll, the amount of onions was a bit too much for me!
In 2024, the store left its location on Sandwall after 25 years and can now be found at Mittelstraße 14.
