Vacations on Föhr in April: relaxation and nature experiences in the “Frisian Caribbean”

The North Frisian island of Föhr is a popular travel destination for good reason – even in spring. Föhr in April shows its quiet, unspoiled side. While the high season is still to come, visitors can enjoy nature in peace and quiet and experience the mild, stimulating climate of the North Sea.

Enjoy nature: walks by the water

In April, nature begins to wake up on Föhr. The first green is appearing on the trees, birds are chirping and now and again the sun comes out from behind the clouds with its warm rays. For us, it’s the perfect time for long walks.

Strand von Föhr

Föhr offers an impressive variety of beaches to suit all tastes, from family-friendly to natural and quiet. We particularly recommend a walk along the miles of fine sandy beach at Wyk or along the dykes, where lambs graze on the lush pastures.

Wanderweg am Stran

Wyk’s main beach is the best known and most popular beach on the island. It stretches directly in front of the town and offers a magnificent view of the Wadden Sea and the Halligen islands. The south beach is an alternative to Wyk’s main beach. It is located south of the town and offers a beautiful mix of nature and relaxation. One of the most beautiful walks connects the two beaches. Whether on the beach through the soft sand or above the beach on the promenade and the hiking trail, it is simply beautiful!

A possible hike

My tip for all those who would like to discover the island is a hike from Wyk to Nieblum! It starts at the beach in Wyk. Simply continue south along the promenade path. Breathe in the fresh sea air on the way, let the wind blow around your nose and simply enjoy! If you prefer something less strenuous, walk above the beach. But it is also wonderful to walk directly by the sea on the mudflats. It’s also worth taking your eyes off the beach, even if it’s really hard! There are thatched houses here from time to time and the dune landscape is really beautiful.

Dünenlandschaft

I have recorded our route on a map, so it’s ideal for “retracing”!

Near the idyllic island village of Nieblum lies one of the most beautiful and quiet beaches on Föhr. The fine sandy beach is particularly popular with families. You could spend hours walking here, collecting shells or simply enjoying the fresh North Sea air.

After a while, we turned inland. We drove past paddocks towards Nieblum. What a cute little place that exudes coziness and tranquillity for me.

Here you can stop off at cafés, do some shopping and don’t miss a look at the church and surrounding cemetery. St. John’s Church is also known as the Friesendom. It is the oldest and largest church on the island.

We did not return via the beach path. In hindsight, however, I would prefer this route, as we walked along the road for long stretches.

Mudflat walks

A highlight on Föhr is a guided mudflat hike – a must for every visitor to the island. If you visit Föhr in April, you will find the mudflats particularly impressive, as the clear light conditions provide unique views of the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site. Under the guidance of a mudflat guide, you are sure to learn a lot about the fascinating flora and fauna.

Wattwandern

Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time and went out on the edge of the mudflats alone at low tide. Without rubber boots and barefoot it was a challenge for me and as an inexperienced mudflat walker I didn’t venture far into the mudflats – but it was still nice.

Cycling on Föhr in April

Föhr is known for its excellent network of cycle paths that criss-cross the island. In April, when the temperatures are moderate, cycling is a particularly nice way to explore the island.

Fahrradtour auf Föhr

There are numerous bike rental stations on the island. During the season, it is essential to book the ferry bikes in advance. In April, when we were there before the Easter vacations, there were still plenty of bikes available.

Whether you visit the small, typically Frisian island villages such as Nieblum or Borgsum or take a detour to the old windmills – you can be very flexible by bike and experience Föhr up close.

Culture and history: museums and Frisian traditions

Föhr also has a lot to offer culturally. It is worth planning a visit to the Frisian Museum in Wyk. Here you can gain an insight into the history and traditions of the islanders. Among other things, visitors can learn more about Föhr’s seafaring past and the Frisian culture that is still alive on the island today.

Friesenmuseum

There is a pottery museum in Oldsum, a small private village museum in Oevenum and the Museum Kunst der Westküste in Alkersum, which are sure to keep you entertained during your stay on the island.

größte Kirche Föhrs

If you are interested in Frisian architecture, you should definitely visit the island’s old churches. The St. Johannis Church in Nieblum, also known as the “Friesendom”, is particularly impressive with its historic architecture and the artistically designed gravestones in the cemetery garden.

The bell tower stands in Wyk. It is the town’s landmark. In the past, it served to warn the inhabitants of danger. The current tower, which has had to be renovated several times over the years, dates back to 1886 and is 20 meters high.

The windmills are also one of the island’s highlights. There are a total of 5 windmills spread across the island (Wyk, Wrixum, Oldsum, Borgsum). In Wyk, one mill can be visited during a visit to the Frisian Museum. Other mills are used as residential buildings or restaurants.

Birdwatching: Spring in the Wadden Sea

April is an excellent time for birdwatchers. Migratory birds make a stopover on Föhr and many native species return from their winter quarters. The salt marshes and mudflats are important habitats for numerous bird species. With a bit of luck, you can spot oystercatchers, shelducks or even rarer species such as the shoveler. Guided tours are available for all those who want to find out more about the birdlife.

Deichweg in Richtung Naturschutzgebiet

The nearby nature reserve is easily accessible from Wyk. From the harbor, you don’t head towards the beach, but in the opposite direction on the dyke. Passing sheep and the first lambs, you quickly arrive here in almost untouched nature. On the way to the nature reserve, you can spot the first birds on the shore and enjoy your time out on the island.

Storks on Föhr

I discovered something very special in Wyk. Here, a private initiative has decided to help the storks.

Storch im Nest in Wyk, Föhr im April

There are fewer and fewer places where storks can build their nests. There is a lack of places to breed. Over the years, their population has declined sharply. A protected place has been created in the middle of Wyk where storks are welcome.

The island storks can breed and raise their young there in a protected environment. In the meantime, they keep coming back and when we walked past there, we could see some young birds in the nests.

Seals on Föhr

The island of Föhr is located in the Wadden Sea National Park, an area known for its dense sandbanks. These sandbanks attract seals, which stay there to breed and rest. The animals can often be seen sunbathing on the sandbanks, especially in summer. However, it is difficult to see seals when visiting Föhr in April. A better opportunity is offered by a boat tour or from the ferries that cross the North Sea.

If you would like to find out more about seals, you should visit the Föhr Seal Center in Wyk on Föhr. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of marine mammals such as seals, grey seals and porpoises. There are no live seals to see in the seal center itself. It is primarily an information and rescue station.
