Eisenach - the Wartburg City
Eisenach is one of the oldest cities in Thuringia and is known worldwide. Eisenach is located in the geographical center of Germany and is therefore easy to reach. The town is an ideal starting point for exploring the Thuringia region. It is home to Wartburg Castle, one of the most famous castles in Germany.
Around 42,000 inhabitants live in Eisenach. This makes the city one of the larger municipalities in Thuringia.
The famous Wartburg Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It played a central role in German history. Martin Luther lived here for some time at Wartburg Castle, which is situated high above the town on a mountain. It was here that he translated the New Testament into German. It is also a place where art and music are still alive today, with exhibitions, concerts and theater performances.
But Johann Sebastian Bach is also part of the city’s history. The city is the birthplace of the artist. The Bach House not only exhibits historical instruments and documents, but also offers interactive experiences such as musical performances on historical instruments.
In the second half of the 19th century, with the beginning of industrialization, the city developed into a center of the automotive industry. The Wartburg and later Opel models rolled off the production line here.
Eisenach is an ideal starting point for exploring the Thuringian Forest. The town is located on the Rennsteig, one of the most famous hiking trails in Germany. The surrounding area offers numerous hiking and cycling trails, including the mystical Dragon Gorge and the Werratal cycle path. Just a stone’s throw away is the Hainich, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with ancient forests and hiking trails that lead through untouched nature.
