Holiday in the Wittenberg District

The district of Wittenberg in Saxony-Anhalt, often equated only with the world-famous Lutherstadt (Luther City), reveals itself on closer inspection to be a multifaceted holiday region with much more to offer than “just” the traces of the Reformation.

A holiday in the Wittenberg district leads many visitors to Wittenberg, the Luther City. It was here that Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church in 1517. Visitors can stroll along the “Historic Mile” and experience the authentic sites of the Reformers’ activities up close. In addition to the Castle Church, the outstanding UNESCO World Heritage sites include the Town Church of St. Mary’s, where Luther preached, the Luther House, his former residence and now the world’s largest museum on the history of the Reformation, as well as the elegant Melanchthon House.

Architecture enthusiasts will get their money’s worth in Dessau, where the Bauhaus, the legendary school of design, experienced its golden age. The Bauhaus Building and the Masters’ Houses, also UNESCO World Heritage sites, are milestones of modern architecture and attract visitors from all over the world.

Wittenberg

A visit to Ferropolis, the “City of Iron,” promises a unique experience. On a peninsula in Lake Gremmin, enormous decommissioned open-cast mining excavators reach for the sky, forming an impressive backdrop for concerts, festivals, and events. In the summer, the lake itself attracts numerous bathers with its beaches.

The district also has much to offer nature lovers. The region is traversed by the Elbe River. Beautiful floodplain landscapes characterize large parts of the natural environment. In the north of the district lies the Fläming region, which shapes the landscape with its gently rolling hills. Quite the opposite awaits holidaymakers in the south of the district. Here, the Dübener Heide (Dübener Heath) extends, one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Central Germany.

Ferropolis – who or what and first and foremost where is Ferropolis? These were my first thoughts when we got asked to come along to watch the Fisherman’s Friend Strongman Nightrun. But if you aren’t curious you’re not going to learn anything new and so we pushed all doubts aside and went on the trip.
