Christmas market in Florence

We hadn’t really expected that a Christmas market would already be open in Florence when we visited at the end of November. Therefore, we were even more pleased that we discovered the small wooden houses on the Piazza Santa Croce.

Every year, in front of the Franciscan Church of Santa Croce, a Christmas market is held in the style of the German Christmas tradition. The market is even called by the German word “Weihnachtsmarkt”.

We strolled through the rows of the small Christmas village. Some of the wooden houses were not yet completely decorated, but nevertheless the merchants took advantage of the weekend rush, which was also increased by the countless marathon runners from all over the world, to offer their goods.

Every year there are about 50 stalls at the Christmas market in Florence and some traders even come especially from Germany. So it is not surprising that you also get similar treats, as in the German Christmas markets. I have seen bratwursts, knuckles and pretzels and with the German mulled wine is even advertised. At the mulled wine, of course, we could not go past and so there was a “mulled wine season opening” for us at 15 degrees in Florence.

The other stalls are also not very different from those at German Christmas markets. From socks to candles, from ceramics to metalwork – here you can find a varied offer. I also discovered some offers that belong more to the region of Florence, but on the whole nothing differed from the German Christmas markets.

But what is really beautiful, the location in front of the church of Santa Croce. It is definitely worth taking a look inside. Here are the tombs of Machiavelli, Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei and Gioachino Rossini.

My tip: It’s not worth going to Florence just for the Christmas market. However, if you are there at the right time of year, it is worth taking a little stroll among the wooden huts.
