Castello Sforzesco – Milan’s Castle

The Castello Sforzesco, like the Duomo, is one of the main attractions in Milan. The castle in Milan is located on the Piazza Castello northwest of the old town. Directly behind the castle is a large park where you can take a wonderful walk.

The first construction of the Castello dates back to the 14th century. After it was destroyed, Francesco Sforza had it rebuilt and also erected the Torre del Filarete. In the course of history, the castle was extended and converted into a residence by numerous famous artists and master builders.
After the rule of the Sfoza family was crushed by the French in 1499, the castle was badly damaged by civil wars, occupation and siege.
Under Spanish rule, the Castello Sforzesco (1526) was expanded into a star-shaped defensive ring according to military considerations. Even Napoleon used the castle when he invaded Milan in 1796.

The Castello is an impressive building. Even in the forecourt, there is a really beautiful fountain that invites you to walk past it in the direction of the castle.
You enter the castle through a large entrance gate and then find yourself in the castle’s inner courtyard.
