Off the beaten track…

Those who visit Verona walk through the city centre, past the Arena, churches, balconies and noble boutiques. And who doesn’t feel like that? Verona has even more to offer, sometimes you just have to look very closely. Off the beaten tourist track, you can take a wonderful walk along the city walls in Verona.

We set off one afternoon, not really knowing where we wanted to go. We came across a beautiful path along the banks of the Adige River, where we noticed the first remains of the city walls in Verona.

Without further ado, the city map was taken out and we explored the course of the city wall.

The Skalingians built a boundary wall around Verona in about 1325. It enclosed about 450 hectares of land. Later, the Venetians and the Austrians took over this area.

Some of the walls are still well preserved today. Some of the city gates and ramparts can also be found in today’s cityscape.

We walked along a long stretch of the old ramparts. You can always see the remains of the city’s defences.

Today, the ramparts are a small park. There are natural paths and shady places under trees. Nevertheless, the city fathers have clarified the historical background of the ramparts.

On our walk we had to cross two major main roads leading into the old town area of Verona. Both roads had to go around the old city gates, which have been preserved as witnesses of time.

In the interior of the city, you can also still find remains of the city wall. However, these are not so quietly situated.

If you are looking for some peace and quiet, you should make your way to the ramparts. There you can enjoy the shade of the trees and forget the time around you.
