We discovered a lovely hotel for our city trip to Riga. We immediately felt at home in Hotel Justus. Hotel Justus is a four-star boutique hotel right in the centre of the Riga Old Town.
The Old Town can be explored on foot with ease from here. The historic building was renovated in 2009 and now offers a total of 45 rooms. The hotel is located in a space of historic significance. In 1210 Bishop Albert had his Baltic residence right here. The original wooden building was destroyed in a fire in the 17th century and was rebuilt together with the other houses on this road in the 18th century.
The façade got another make-over in 1874. A tavern moved into the building in the early 19th century and after that, it was home to workshops, pharmaceutical labs and offices. It might be also of interest for cineastes. Soviet movie production companies shot a few films at this location. “17 moments in spring” or “Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson” were shot here and show the street.
I particularly liked the interior design of the hotel. It features a brick wall, different artworks and cosy seating arrangements. That instantly translated into a feeling of “home” to me. We booked a standard double room. The bathroom was of a simple and practical design and very clean. The room itself was decorated with wonderful wooden furniture that I would have expected in the Alps rather than in Riga. The room had a French double bed. The firmness of the matress suited us very well and ensured a good night sleep.
Breakfast was rich and varied. We found muesli, dark bread, cold meat, cheese and fish on the table. Everything that made the start of the day taste good. My special tip: We booked the hotel’s sauna for two hours one night. We got private access for 15€. Towels and slippers were included, we only purchased some water bottles to take in with us. A small bathroom and shower next to the sauna and a small recreation room made for a perfect experience.
