It is estimated that there are about 2,000 manor houses and castles in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Of these, more than 1,000 are listed buildings. About a third of the houses are used for tourism and are open to visitors.
In mid-June, the MitsommerRemise has been taking place in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for several years. The event is organised by the Association of Castles, Mansions and Manor Houses in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. On a weekend, to coincide with the summer solstice, you can visit and tour numerous castles, manor houses and stately homes.
Each house offers a small programme. From carriage rides and guided tours of the houses to musical events and exhibitions, the programme is varied and diverse. I found it particularly exciting to take a look inside the often beautiful houses. During the guided tours or in the thematic exhibitions, you learn so much about the region and the houses. Sometimes it’s like a little journey through time.
A little tip: You need some time if you want to discover everything. So it’s better to select specific offers from the large programme according to the motto “less is more”.
I discovered a wide variety of manor houses and even fell a little in love with some places. Some of the houses can also be visited outside the MidsummerRemise. They offer accommodation in a wide range of price categories, run a restaurant, organise concerts or other events or offer exhibitions on a variety of topics. Other houses are still looking for a new owner who will lovingly give them a new lease of life.
Manor houses in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
I have written about my visits and impressions of the manor houses and some castles in the region.
Very close to Anklam, on the southern bank of the Peene River, lies the small village of Liepen. The federal road 110 leads the visitors of Vorpommern through this small place.
The municipality of Ramin is located in the very south-east of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. At the Ramin Manor House you can go on a voyage of discovery into the world of wild herbs.
During my stay in Schwerin I discovered many beautiful places. Certainly only a fraction of what Schwerin has to offer. So a good reason to visit Schwerin again.
The visitor highlight in Schwerin is the beautiful castle. The whole year over thousands of visitors from all over the world come here and certainly many are just as speechless as I was when I could take a first look at the castle Schwerin at the setting sun.A bit like a Disney castle, a movie…
You have to look very carefully on the map until you discover the small place Lexow. Idyllically nestled between meadows and fields, very close to Lake Plauer See and Müritz lies the manor house Lexow - an ideal place to spend a relaxing dream vacation.
You can explore the surroundings of Schwerin beautifully by bike. Our ride took us the nearly 15-kilometer route to Wiligrad Castle on Schwerin Lake.
Zinzow is a district of Boldekow in Western Pomerania. Zinzow Castle is located here, which I visited during the Midsummer Remise.
On the border to Mecklenburg Switzerland, in the municipality of Lalendorf, lies the village of Vogelsang with its striking manor house.
In the municipality of Lalendorf is the Vietgest Castle, which after its renovation has become an interesting place for events. During the Midsummer Remise I was able to take a look at the beautiful grounds.
On Lake Kummerow in the Mecklenburg Lake District stands the impressive manor house "Schloss Kummerow". Here you can discover a unique photographic collection.
In Western Pomerania in the municipality of Groß Polzin lies one of the few preserved Renaissance buildings in the region, the Quilow moated castle. Shortly after the opening of the ground floor, we were allowed to take a look inside.
After a wonderful day on the Müritz, you should also treat yourself to an excellent dinner. We went to the Morizaner restaurant in the Ludorf manor house and had dinner there.
The village of Damerow is located very close to the Brandenburg state border in the municipality of Rollwitz. In the slightly hilly and predominantly agricultural region, the Damerow manor lies between the Pasewalk church forest and the high plateau of the Uckermark.
