Dijklodges Wijk bij Duurstede: Unique B&B on the dike

We are driving along the embankment road of the Rijndijk when we reach one of the most beautiful accommodations we have ever stayed in. Nestled directly behind the dike lies the Bed & Breakfast Dijklodges.

Arrive and Feel at Home: The “Living Room” of the Dijklodges

We leave the car in the free parking lot and enter through an inconspicuous door into the reception and breakfast area. However, that description doesn’t quite capture the charm of the space. To me, it feels more like a living room. With its cozy sofas, rustic tables, and a bar, I immediately felt like I had “arrived” and was right at home.

Unique Architecture: From Fruit Storage to Design Lodge

What makes the Dijklodges so unique is their history and architecture. The lodges themselves are located in the attic of a former fruit crate warehouse, situated on the grounds of a historic dike farm. Where fruit was once stored, there are now five stylish lodges, cleverly integrated between the old, robust wooden beams of the roof structure.

Dijklodges Wijk bij Duurstede: Lodge zwischen Dachbalken

We head up a rather steep staircase toward Room Number 3. Up here, the “attic” feel is barely noticeable. The honeycomb-inspired design is modern and reflects the owner’s passion for his bees (and yes, there is honey from his own production for breakfast!). Only the whistling of the wind against the old, exposed beams reminds you of the building’s original use, making it feel all the more cozy inside.

A Peek Inside Our Lodge: Bee Design Meets Luxury

The moment we step through the door, we find ourselves in a luxurious lodge that I honestly didn’t want to leave. Cozy, bright, modern, and exactly my taste—my happy place during this trip!

Lodge im B&B

The Highlight: Adjustable Beds with a Dream View

The centerpiece of the room is the large bed. It is positioned perfectly so that you can look out the window the moment you wake up and enjoy the picturesque view toward Wijk bij Duurstede. The best part? The mattresses are electrically height-adjustable. I tested it out, of course, and I have to say: reading in bed has never been so relaxing.

The Private Balcony: A View of the Mill in Any Weather

Another highlight of the lodge is the private balcony, which features adjustable glass walls. This allows you to sit outside in any weather and enjoy the view of the windmill and the Grote Kerk (Great Church).

Modern Design with a Floral Touch

The love for bees is also reflected in the room’s design, especially in the modern bathroom. Alongside the honeycombs, you’ll find a refreshingly modern floral design.

A Breakfast to Savor

After a wonderfully restful night, we headed down for breakfast in the “living room.” The tables were already set, and as soon as we sat down, a feast was served. Coffee, freshly baked croissants and rolls, a platter of meats and cheeses, fruit, and of course, their own honey… it was a dream breakfast! It was a pity we couldn’t stay and enjoy it forever.
