Stayokay Hostel Bunnik: A green oasis just outside Utrecht

After a long day in Utrecht, the Stayokay Hostel Bunnik offers an ideal place to recharge. Located not far from the vibrant city center, the hostel sits in an idyllic spot on the edge of the village of Bunnik, directly on the banks of the Kromme Rijn.

Perfect Location: Natural Idyll Meets City Proximity

The biggest asset of this hostel is undoubtedly its location. It is literally surrounded by greenery and borders the historic Amelisweerd estate. Despite this rural idyll, Utrecht is surprisingly close.

By bike, you can reach Utrecht’s city center via beautiful paths in about 20 to 30 minutes. Alternatively, bus connections offer a fast and direct link to Utrecht Central Station.

The Hostel: From Manor House to Dormitories

Stayokay Bunnik is part of the well-known Dutch hostel chain and caters to a wide audience. The hostel has 45 rooms located in various buildings. We spent our stay in an old manor house. Here, the guest rooms are located in the upper part of the building, while the ground floor houses the lounge and breakfast room for the hostel.

An exterior view of the Stayokay Hostel Bunnik, a grand two-story brick building with black shutters and white-framed windows, nestled among lush green trees and a grassy lawn with a gravel path.

Room Categories for Every Need

The hostel offers its guests quite different room categories. Those who wish can enjoy the classic hostel experience with shared dormitories (dorms). Additionally, there is a large selection of private and family rooms, many of which include an en-suite bathroom.

Tip: Bed linen is included in the price of the stay. Towels are only provided in private rooms but can be rented for a fee.

This interior view of a room at Utrecht Hostel features dark wooden tables and chairs on a polished floor, illuminated by a large chandelier and wall sconces under a high ceiling with exposed beams. A large window with dark curtains offers a view of the outdoors, while a bar area and decorative mirrors add to the rustic atmosphere.

Our Experience: Double Room & Breakfast

We spent the night in a double room with a private bathroom.

The Double Room: Functional with a Beautiful View

The furnishings were very simple and functional. The shower and toilet were in a separate room, while the sink was located inside the bedroom. I found the room size perfectly sufficient for one night; however, for a longer stay, it would have been too cramped for me, and I would have missed having a way to store my clothes.

In the darkness of the evening, the large windows initially hid just how dreamily beautiful the hostel’s location is. The true highlight of the room only revealed itself the next morning: the view out of the window directly onto the misty Amelisweerd estate was a truly wonderful start to the day.

A scenic view of the Utrecht Hostel Rundgang features a brick building nestled among lush green and yellow autumn trees, reflecting in the calm waters of a canal.

The Breakfast Buffet: A Solid Start to the Day

The breakfast buffet met our expectations. It is a typical Dutch/continental buffet featuring bread, rolls, muesli, yogurt, cold cuts, cheese, jam, as well as coffee, tea, and juices. The selection and variety were very good.

A breakfast buffet at a hostel features a spread of fresh vegetables, including sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, and salad, alongside various meats, cheeses, jams, and bottles of milk.

Tips for Your Stay: Restaurant, Bar & Surroundings

The hostel features a restaurant, a cozy bar, and a spacious terrace overlooking the river. Unfortunately, the restaurant had already closed by the time we arrived, but the atmosphere at the bar was very relaxed. Over a regional beer, we quickly struck up conversations with other travelers—a successful way to end the evening.

Before we departed the next day, there was still some time to explore the immediate surroundings. There are signposted hiking and cycling paths that invite you to take long walks and bike tours. Stayokay Hostel Bunnik even offers its own bike rental, allowing you to discover the area at your leisure.

A wide, cobblestone path leads toward the brick Stayokay Hostel Bunnik building, which features a central arched gateway, a dark tiled roof with a small spire, and is surrounded by lush autumn trees.

Conclusion: Ideal Base for Visitors to Utrecht

Stayokay Bunnik is an affordable accommodation option in a strategically perfect location. Anyone who wants to discover the cultural treasures of Utrecht but prefers listening to the rustling of trees rather than city traffic at night will find this an ideal base.

Excursion Destinations Nearby

Museum Oud Amelisweerd (MOA): Just a few minutes’ walk from the hostel lies this beautiful manor house. It houses the Museum Oud Amelisweerd, which is dedicated to art, people, and nature, often featuring rotating exhibitions (specifically regarding wallpaper and Chinese art).

Fort bij Vechten (Waterline Museum): This impressive fort is located only about 10–15 minutes away by bike. It is part of the “New Dutch Waterline” (a UNESCO World Heritage site). The Waterline Museum located there is modernly designed and explains the history of this unique Dutch defense line in an interactive way. An absolute must for history buffs.
