Eating out in the Groningen region is wonderfully diverse. Whether in the city or in the surrounding rural areas, there is a mixture of traditional Dutch dishes and international cuisines to discover.
Many restaurants in the Groningen region attach great importance to using fresh, regional ingredients and often offer seasonal menus. Whether in a cosy bistro, an upscale restaurant or at one of the many markets, the gastronomic scene in Groningen is characterized by diversity and creativity.
Paviljoen Flonk
Paviljoen Flonk is a restaurant near Blauwestad, located on the beautiful Oldambtmeer lake in Finsterwolde.
Sitting on the terrace in warm weather, you have a beautiful view of a small part of the Oldambtmeer. There are even jetties for guests who would like to interrupt their trip on the large artificial lake for a break. It is the ideal place for a delicious lunch or dinner, a coffee on the terrace or a cozy evening with friends.
The restaurant offers a varied menu for lunch, high tea and dinner.
We were there for lunch and both had a tuna salad. I liked it, but the amount of tuna was too much for me, a little more “green” would have made the salad lighter.

Restaurant tip: Brasserie Old School
The old school in Midwolda is located right next to the lock. The building, which dates back to 1869, was once home to the first Christian school in the region, where pupils went in and out and hopefully learned meaningful things that enriched their lives. Today, the renovated building is home to the Brasserie Old School.
We had the opportunity to enjoy dinner here in a stylish ambience. When the weather is nice, you can sit on the terrace and look out over the Oldambtmeer. In the evening, we were able to enjoy a lovely table right next to one of the large windows, which provided a beautiful view.
The evening menu offered many wonderful dishes and we were really spoiled for choice. I opted for a portobello with marinated tomato and goat’s cheese with zucchini spaghetti. What a fantastic dish! From the portion size, which was just right for me, to the taste of the individual components. I was perfectly happy with my choice. Patrick opted for the dish “Swedish farmyard pork with a sauce of Groningen mustard”. The meat was juicy, cooked to perfection and he was also happy with his choice.
Brassierie Old School is definitely one of our tips when it comes to eating out in Groningen.

‘t Oal Kroegie – Eating in the Vesting Bourtange
When visiting the Vesting Bourtange, you should not miss a visit to the restaurant ‘t Oal Kroegie. We ate there and really enjoyed it.
In good weather, you can sit directly on the market square. Sitting under tall trees in the shade, you can watch the hustle and bustle on the central square of Bourtange Fortress. There is also the option of taking a seat in the cozy dining room.
A glance at the menu showed us that there is a good selection of savory and sweet dishes. We opted for pork in peanut sauce and a meat with mushroom sauce. We also had fries, which I drowned in the peanut sauce. The portions were just right for our eating habits and the meat tasted great.
I was so full afterwards that I unfortunately couldn’t try the Groningen Eggballs. I was told that this Groningen food should definitely be on the menu when visiting the region.
Tip: The ice cream sundaes at the next table looked very tempting.

Kopje Genieten
The family-run café/restaurant Kopje Genieten is located in a small wooded area in Sellingen. We took a break there during a tour with an e-chopper. A wonderful, relaxing place where you can also enjoy great cakes!
There are cozy seating areas in front of the house, a bright and friendly dining room and a large garden with additional seating for guests. I particularly liked the fact that the tables are spread out on the lawn and you can enjoy space and privacy.
A glance at the menu revealed that there is a good selection of sandwiches, soups and salads. You can certainly have a good lunch here. However, we were tempted by the cakes and the desire for a good coffee.
At Kopje Genieten, they bake delicious seasonal cakes and moist cheesecakes or chocolate cakes themselves. We were there during the blueberry season and were delighted with two different blueberry cakes, which we naturally wanted to try.
The coffee fulfilled our wishes and the cake was simply delicious!

Grand Café Restaurant “In de Brouwerij”
The Grand Café Restaurant “In de Brouwerij” is located in the heart of Veendam in the Brouwhotel Parkzicht. It is possible to sit on the terrace or in a cozy dining room.
We sat in the dining room in the evening and discovered the glass brewing kettle before we ordered. This is where the in-house Bogdike beer is brewed, which we found delicious.
If you want to eat here at lunchtime (Monday to Sunday from 11:30 to 15:00), you will find a lunch menu with delicious sandwiches and lunch dishes, for example.
In the evening (Monday to Sunday from 17:00 to 21:30) we were able to choose our meal from the evening menu. In addition to typical brewery dishes such as burgers, there are also regional specialties such as asparagus and game dishes as well as the famous mussel pots during mussel season.
I opted for a burger, which went perfectly with the beer.
