Like many other bigger cities of touristic interest Rotterdam, too, has a Welcome Card visitors can purchase. We picked one up for the first three days of our trip and give you the breakdown if it was really worth it.
We travelled to Rotterdam by train from Amsterdam and arrived at the impressive central station. There is a tourist information desk in the foyer where the Welcome Card can be bought. They come as a 1, 2 or 3 day ticket.
What is included in the Rotterdam Welcome Card…
We got a little leaflet with our card. It listed around 50 offers and possible discounts. For more information, one would need to go to the Welcome Card website and check out the additional details.
Using public transport for free
We chose to go with a 3-day ticket. The main reason behind that was that public transport within the RET network is included in the ticket – that is the bus, metro and tram.
Important! The special late bus service and trains are not included.
Because our hotel wasn’t in a central location that we could have walked to and from we got a lot of value out of the card for that reason alone.
More information around Rotterdam’s public transport can be found here.
Discounts for tourist attractions and popular sights
We only used a fraction of the numerous options one has with the Rotterdam Welcome Card
For example, we got a 25% discount on our tickets for the Spido boat tour, the Euromast Tower, the ss Rotterdam and the Cubic House museum.
If we would have chosen to make use of it we could have had 25% discount on city tours on foot or on a bus, bike rental and ticket prices of other sights. But we didn’t have that much time and to be honest, some of the discounted activities didn’t interest me that much. But if we were fans of museums (or if we would have had bad weather) we might have made use of the 25 – 50% discount in the participating museums.
Discounts in cafés and restaurants
There is also some money to be saved with the Rotterdam Welcome Card on food and drinks in participating restaurants. Here, too, discounts of up to 25% are available. We did not make use of this option and instead dined closer to our hotel.
How much is the Rotterdam Welcome Card?
1 day: 12€
2 days: 18€
3 days: 23€
These were the current prices in 2019.
Where does one get the Rotterdam Welcome Card?
The cards are available at the tourist information desks in the central station and at the Rotterdam Airport.
The tourist information centre in the city centre and some hotels are another option to purchase the card.
You could also order the Rotterdam Welcome Card in advance online if you wish to do so.
Conclusion
On this trip the card was worth the price for us. I checked online which discounts sounded interesting to us and then did a price comparison. If we hadn’t used public transport so much on this trip the cost of the card would have been too high for us. If your plan is to visit many museums and other sights in a short time then the Rotterdam Welcome Card is also worth its price tag.
