Wrocław: The Venice of Poland or the City of Dwarves
The city of Wrocław lies on the River Oder. It attracts visitors with its unique charm, countless bridges and a fascinating history. A city trip to Wrocław is well worth it at any time of year.
Wrocław’s Main Square (Rynek) certainly holds its own against those in Prague or Kraków. The colourful houses exude an incredible sense of cosiness. The majestic Gothic Town Hall stands proudly in the centre. There’s always something going on in the square – whether it’s a food festival or a Christmas market, this is where people meet.
On Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski), the city’s history, stretching back over a thousand years, is even more palpable. This is where the city has its origins. On an evening stroll, you can witness a real lamplighter at work. He still lights the historic gas lanterns by hand here every evening.
Another highlight is the Wrocław Market Hall (Hala Targowa). This architectural masterpiece, built of red brick and featuring massive concrete arches, not only offers an incredible backdrop but is also a paradise for foodies.
There is one very special tradition that almost automatically takes hold of every visitor here: the hunt for the Wrocław dwarves (Krasnale). It is said that there are now over a thousand of these little bronze figures. They are hidden all over the city and tell the humorous and, at times, rebellious story of Wrocław.
Wrocław is a city for foodies. It offers a fascinating blend of hearty Silesian tradition and cutting-edge, international cuisine. Away from the classic pierogi restaurants, the Four Churches District (Dzielnica Czterech Świątyń) is home to countless trendy cafés, vegan bistros and first-class craft beer bars, for which Wrocław is renowned throughout Poland.
Anyone needing a break from sightseeing will find numerous recreational areas in the city. In summer, half the city gathers on the banks of the Oder (Odra) at the numerous beach bars. The vast Scheitniger Park (Park Szczytnicki), with its sweeping meadows, idyllic Japanese Garden and the famous Centennial Hall, is the perfect spot for a stroll or a picnic.
Wrocław is no longer an insider’s tip. But it’s a great destination for a city break. Anyone looking for the perfect blend of magnificent architecture, excellent food, urban flair and a relaxed atmosphere will feel right at home here.

As I step off the tram and walk through Szczytnicki Park, I already sense that something grand awaits me. Suddenly, it flashes between the lush green of the trees: the Centennial Hall in Wrocław (Polish: Hala Stulecia). Even at first glance, the massive domed structure looks much more imposing in reality than in any photo.
