Vila Nova de Gaia
Vila Nova de Gaia, or Gaia for short, is a city in Portugal that tourists usually do not recognize as a city in its own right. Many city visitors to Porto mistakenly think that Gaia is still Porto when they cross the Douro to the other side of the river
Vila Nova de Gaia and its surrounding counties is the third largest and one of the most populous counties in Portugal. The city offers some of the best panoramic views of Porto and the Douro River. Particularly impressive is the walk across the Ponte Dom Luís I, an iconic bridge that connects Vila Nova de Gaia to Porto. From here, you have a breathtaking view of the red roofs of Porto and the picturesque river landscape.
Vila Nova de Gaia is known for its beautiful beaches. The city has the highest number of Blue Flag beaches in Portugal, which speaks for its cleanliness and environmental friendliness. Popular beaches such as Miramar, Granja and Aguda invite you to relax and enjoy the proximity to the sea.

The center of port wine production is located here and countless liters of wine are stored in large warehouses on the south bank of the Douro. In addition to the wine culture, Vila Nova de Gaia offers an authentic and charming atmosphere.
Today, tourism is an important economic factor in Gaia. The port wine cellars and the touristically developed banks of the Douro with the moorings for river cruise ships and the departure points for excursion boats attract vacationers. However, many do not realize that they are no longer actually in Porto.
